So, I have a hell of a project now - DK JR cocktail

Picked up a DK JR cocktail today. Powers up, monitor is wavy as hell with bars. Full capkit including new pots and b+ filter cap should take care of it.

PCB makes the boot up "jump" noise but then freaks out... nothing displays on the monitor and it just makes random noises/squeals.. kind of sounds like a siren... it's the same sound effect playing over and over and over.

I plan to take out the PCB, check all the voltages, and if they're within tolerance, put in my DK pcb. This is just a straight up plug and play swap right? The cocktail is wired with an edge connector and my DK is 2 boards. I should also be able to hook up the DK JR board into my DK upright using the rainbow cables etc right? Of course, I'd want to check voltages/etc to make sure I don't fry something that is already working. If I can't troubleshoot the issue I'll probably end up sending it off to Mike's Arcade for repair.

Does this seem like some good plan of attack? Anything special I should know about dismantling the cocktail vs the upright, which I have a decent amount of experience with?

yes, you can put your dk pcb in the ct, and your dkjr pcb in the dk upright.

when using the edge connector you need to also use the 10 pin power cable that goes from the cpu board to the video board.

Was this the one that was for sale in Union on CL? I thought about getting that one myself :)

OK, thanks. Kinda glad I didn't bother then. It was hard to tell what kind of condition it was from the small photos. I've already got a DK cocktail, but it's in pretty good condition, no rust, etc, but it could use a cap kit (monitor is pretty clear though) and there are some scratches in the glass, but nothing too obnoxious. But I paid alot more than $100 for it.

Okay, I metered the voltages coming into the game, to the monitor, and to the edge connector... everything checks out, 112 VAC in, 5vdc 12vdc -5vdc all check out. I put my DK boardset into the cocktail to see if it would play blind, but like an idiot I forgot that the sound board is part of the monitor, which is not currently in the table.

Then I took my DK JR board and put it into my DK cab to get a better look at what happens when you try to boot the game. When I first power it on, I get the normal "jump" sound at boot. I then get several "heart beat" type sounds where the jump sound plays twice in a row (think of a heart beat.. lubdub pause.... lubdub pause..... lubdub pause... except it's the jump sound) and each time the jump sound fires, a thin white line flashes on the monitor in a different location each time. This happens 10-12 times or so (didn't count) and then the screen flashes a bunch of multicolored U type shapes, and then the screen flips 180 and flashes the Us again (except this time upside down)... and then the screen goes dead and I can hear the jump sound playing over and over, except it gets cut off so it sounds kind of like a siren.

I understand a video's worth a thousand words, so I'll try to record it and throw it on youtube or somesuch.

Any ideas, other than "send it to mike's arcade"? Honestly, I'll probably end up shipping it there in the long run, but if I can fix it myself for $10 by swapping out a few roms/rams/transistors I'd like to give it a shot.

BTW the monitor that came with the cocktail has the worst case of monitor waviness I've ever seen. I've seen the "flag rolling in the wind" effect before -- this is "flag rolling in a hurricane". Pretty fun to watch actually. I measured it corner to corner and got 18"... what size is this monitor actually? It seems smaller than the 19" that's in my upright but I haven't measured to confirm.

It is probably the Sanyo 18z2ab. I just worked on one. The cap kit and the pot kits from Bob Roberts for the 20EZ worked on it. Also the inversion board elimination kit, but you won't be using that.

This is good information, thanks. I'll order the capkit and prob throw in some ram too just to try it. I'm assuming the soundboard cap kit will work as well?
