As the local hometown "arcade" guy.. I was asked to bring some games to a local chili feed competition, beer served, adult only. They sold quarters 3/$1, and they wanted some working games to entertain and maybe make a few bux. All I had that was accessable was from a previous days game run, which was a Tapper, Centipede cocktail and a Meteor in my garage.
Well, they did well selling quarters as folks were just donating, but this is the weird part, hardly anyone played them. In fact I also volunteered to serve beer so I could watch the games and make sure nobody shit on the Tapper or god forbid used the cup holders for their intended purpose, but folks would gather around them, and just look at them? WTF? Age range of 30-50 I would say. Most folks wanted to drink and eat and shoot the shit.. but it was funny. Tons of folks wanted to talk about them and ask "If you ever see a Galaga machine...call me" type of comments but for fux sake folks.. The news was there covering the event and filmed the games two or three times.. we made $38 on "donations".. I cleared $8.50 from the games in total, with the pin gathering only $.75 and the Tapper $2.25. Folks gawked at the Tapper and would walk around it like it was an alien... just looking amazed... funny, I told a couple of folks they better play it for the last time in their lives and they did,, anyhow, just wanted to share what the general public thought... a lot of it had to do with the beers and the brightly lit room, time, etc...
