So I bought a non-working Galaga and Ms. Pacman off of craigslist...

Same story you always hear.. "They were working when I moved... now they don't"

Well, I just unloaded them both off the truck, and have been messing with them for 3 hours with no luck on anythng. I'm hoping someone here can shed some life and tell me I did okay with this transaction. The GF isn't too excited for me right now. ;)

Ms. Pacman.
*Hooked to my MK monitor... here's what it's doing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Id3Uia2wv24

The Good: Has a "new" Pentrantic 1019 monitor in it, great cabinet, marquee, cp, bezel, marquee lights up, coin doors light up, coin mechs work.

The Ugly:
1. No video, the monitor is blowing the fuse (on the monitor's PCB). I've checked everything and see no short, so Im assuming it's the flyback, but I dont know where to find a replacement. (Arcadeshop doesnt list it)
2. Sound is HORRIBLE. I can push the credit button and it sounds like it's in the water, push 1 player button and all the music, pellets, everything sounds HORRIBLE. I hooked up a different speaker, still sounds the same. It literally sounds like someone screaming in water with their mouth filled with pudding. It's nasty.

(Questions in short- Sound problems and monitor problems)

Now... I figured, okay, I struck out... let's see next..

Galaga.

The Good: Original dedicated cabinet. Marquee looks good. Control panel looks brand new.
tests +5.03 at power supply on board.

The Bad: Original monitor, I can see GAME OVER burnt into the screen, even with machine powered off. I plug it in, and it blows a 2 amp fuse on the board mounted to the bottom of the machine. (one leading to the monitor). Pushing the credit button does nothing, nothing is responding. unplugging monitor completely, the fuse doesnt blow, but the game still does nothing. if you unplug it for awhile and plug it back in, it makes random noises from the game, then hangs.

Obviously having no monitors will be a huge problem. I do have a Blitz99 and Mortal Kombat. Can I output the RGB to these monitors to at least test the boards? Or since Galaga and Pac use vert. monitors will it work? I would like to know they are working boards before I spend money repairing the monitors.

Thank you!!!

You can connect these monitors to your MK machine. THe pic will display sideways but that should be good enough.

Clean the edge connectors on both machines and reseat them. Many of the problems I find with this era of Midway games are caused by loose edge connectors.

Ugh, you scored the top 2 on my wanted list. Good luck on getting them working, youve reached the biggest fountain of information available on the WWW.

Did they work fine when picked up and then did you lay them on thier back when transporting?
If so, pull ALL the boards to make sure there are no screws, coins, etc. shorting out something.
Loose screws can be sneaky and most often are there from previous repairs.
Out side of that, sorry I wouldn't know on these machines.

For the monitors blowing fuses, check the big cans on the side of the chassis (regulators and HOTs) to make sure they're not shorted to ground (the chassis frame itself). Also check the diode in the bridges on the monitors to make sure none of them are shorted internally. IME that takes care of 99% of blown fuses like that.

I'll try that tonight. Makes since, Blitz is a medium resolution monitor so I doubt good ole' ms. pac would output correctly to it.
Maybe that will at least let me see if Ms. Pacman is playing correctly (besides the sound)
and see if Galaga is giving any error codes.

I checked for screws and coins..nothing. I didnt transport them on their back, but they were not working when I picked them up, I bought the set as is.

Update.
Im out here in the garage with them. I unhooked my Mortal Kombat monitor and it's hooked up to Galaga... nothing. On top of that, the Galaga isnt making any noises tonight.

Hooked it up to Ms. Pacman, shows the mazes, no ghosts, no ms. pacman. sound is still distorted.

Tips?/suggestions?

Just pulled the galaga board to clean and check the connector. Noticed that the chip on 1N of the video board is missing pins! pulled it and it crumbled in my hands. :(

Should I just look for a replacement PCB?
