It has to get sent out for repair again! I have had a rough year with SONY. My first PS3 overheated and died so I had to cancel my fully paid PS Vita Pre-Order to get me a new PS3. My new PS3 (literally bought two weeks prior to the early Pre-Order bonus release of the PS Vita) had the Blu-Ray Drive die back in July. Now for the last month I have power issues so I contacted SONY today and they are sending me another box to get it repaired. My power standby light isn't even lit. I press the buton and the standby (red) light comes on solid. Press it again and the system (green) light comes on and the console hangs in boot. Bummer. Sometimes it takes me as many as 4 times to start up the system properly. Today, I can't even do that...blah. Now I have to pull my 500GB hard drive again and send the system back with it's original 160GB HDD. I have like 200 games on it that I will have to redownload (again) when it gets back (again). My fat system survived since launch and my slim didn't make it 6 months. So disappointed...

I hated the reliability and loading times of my PS1, but I am actually very happy with my PS2 and PS2 kiosk. I have never felt the need to move to the PS3 (and we also have an Xbox and a Wii, I play neither). Is it just a progressive console gamer thing to keep moving up because it's the next big thing? Go back to a PS2, you'll be happy you did.

What is you smoking?

That sucks.

I had a 20 gig backward compatible that was going out on me. It was a "NOS" sort of thing that sat on a shelf for years at the store. I sold it to a guy brand new. I ended up trading an extra PS2 I had and my non-backward compatible system for the 20 gig. Shortly less than a year after he bought it I had trouble reading one disc. I knew it was the beginning of the end, so I called up Sony. Despite it being purchased new less than a year from the problem, they said it was no longer supported. I made the argument they still needed to cover it because their warranty says 1 year from new. I pretty much said screw it and used the store warranty the guy bought before. I got the ORIGINAL asking price back ($399) and bought a $299 slim plus games... worked out for me.

At least this system is still covered under the SONY warranty. I have until February to buy the extended warranty. I will definitely be getting that (along with renewing my PS+ subscription). I already have the system so I might as well. I really like the system and the games and stuff...I am just bummed about the crappy breakdowns it's had.

I haven't really liked my PS3 since sony pulled the linux support and ticked me off bad enough that I will never buy another console/TV, ETC. from them ever again. Also they usually just send you a refurbished one rather than fixing yours...

I was bummed about the abandonment of Linux support too. However, I didn't utilize it when the system first came out. I hadn't gotten into Linux until just after SONY cut the option from the PS3.

I have sent in two different systems before and both times I got my original console back. However, the customer service rep said they probably would be sending me a different console back since this was most likely a system AND power issue.

PS2 held my interest through the bulk of this console generation, but modern games are really starting to take their toll on it now. I look at it in terms of value, and you can pick up a used console and quite a few decent games for a reasonable price now.

Like the PS1 before it, time is going to strip the PS2 of all but its best games. Then you'll have the stuff that's been great since day one, and the rest that's just unplayable by modern standards.

Wow...I've been following your PS3-trouble threads and I've got to say sorry, that sucks! Earlier this year I rescued a PS3 fat original model from a pawn shop and it's been nothing but solid after a new hard drive. And it has a terrible Gamestop green re-manufactured seal! I was considering getting a slim while they are still available (now that the junky looking slim-mer came out) but this thread has me reconsidering. I guess I'll just use my fat unit until it dies. Maybe they are the best built of all models? Your launch unit lasted for a good number of years.

I still *knock on wood* Have my 2007 Japanese fat 20GB PS3. About over a month ago I replaced the HD with a 500GB and finally got PS+ a few days ago. Really hooked on the PacMan Namco generations. (hated the one on xbox)

Updated it today with the new FW, and it takes ages to load the trophy list. Things are moved around, and since the update before last. The PS3 is just sloooooooooow! UFC3 and a couple of others are ridiculous with load times. Xbox is a breeze.

For some reason, one of the main things that has always irritated me about the PS3 is how every menu item on the XMB has to "load" every time I open it up. I understand that on some menu items that change, but most of the menus are STATIC and never change...why do I have to wait (albeit only a second or two at most) for them to "load" EVERY TIME?

It may seem minor, but it just seems stupid.

Fixed 256MB of system memory, whereas the 360 has a unified 512MB. That split pool and the fixed % of it that Sony has dedicated to the XMB(48MB) means there's less to work with than on the 360, where when not running an app(game) is free to use what they want.
The XMB is not free to access more than it's fixed allocated amount.

I assumed it was a technical limitation of some kind, but it just seems stupid when talking about such a supposed high end console.

I've had a PS3 for about 3-1/2 years. I've never even put an actual game into it now that I think about it. Damn thing probably doesn't even work now. :/

I got the shipping box yesterday so now I just have to put the original hard drive back in and arrange for it to be picked up.

That's sad but it also shows that there aren't any must-have titles on that platform. My brothers have the PS3 and 360 but aside from some 1st person shooter games and MVC3 I don't think there are enough good titles for either system.

My PS3 has come home...

Got my system back from SONY today. Still the same console that I have had from February so no switching my console out for a factory substitute. I like that because my console is spotless, of course. However, I have 1 gripe. It came back minus one of the square rubber feet on the bottm...uugghh. I already bought some extra replacements for it, but still stupid. Now to fire it up and REdownload everything again. My console should be back to par in about a month...hooray!
