SNK LS-30 Rotary problem (Ikari Warriors)

I just got an Ikari Warriors cabinet and am having a problem with the player 2 rotary stick. I believe it was working before and after the move (trying to get my buddy to confirm as he was on player 2 in both cases) but last night I tried it and there is a glitch in the rotary mechanism.

I can go into the test mode and start rotating it, and all the clicks are registered. However, instead of clicking through the 12 positions in order (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12), postion 2 registers as position 11 (1,11,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12). This kind of confuses the game and makes it unplayable.

Any clues on where to start with this? I swapped where the joysticks connect to the PCB and the problem followed the stick.

The rotary harness might be messed up. If you haven't tried this already, hook up the "broken" joystick to the player 1 rotary harness (where the harness connects to the joystick), and see if the joystick works that way. If it does, then it's the player 2 rotary harness, not the stick.

Of course, the fact that it was working before and that 11 is being registered twice makes this unlikely, but something to confirm anyway.

I will check this tonight, but I think the harness is directly soldered onto the broken stick (looks like it's been worked on in the past). My working, player 1 stick has the normal looking harness on the stick that I see in pictures.
 
Hmmm, might be some issues with that "custom" harness. You'll see from the player 1 harness that the wires don't go in order from joystick connector to PCB connector. You can use your player 1 harness as a reference, but here's the order also...

So each wire is actually direct soldered in (I think, there's a piece of plastic covering the connections). However, I followed your wiring diagram and it matches. Would this suggest that something in the rotary mechanism is failing and needs to be replaced?

I'm wondering if I shouldn't just try and replace this bastardized stick. The shaft on it is bent a bit too.
 
Not sure what the problem is. It sucks that the wires are soldered on so you can't test it with the good harness. I would see if anyone has a shaft/rotary from an LS-30 in there spare parts boxes.

Yeah, thanks for your help though. This issue's getting put on hold. I'm having a whole host of other issues with the game. Started acting weird after a day or two of having it.

I'll add some pictures tonight, but here's a preview. The game stopped accepting coin inputs (but the coin counter still ticks, which is weird). I took a look at the connector to the PCB (board is the non-jamma version) and and everything is wired up correctly but one of the four +5V wires is broken and the extender card is looking a little brown and melted on the power side. Not sure what the heck is going on or if this has to do with the coin input not working. All other inputs seem fine (accept for the 2nd rotary position on player 2).

Also, power supply is reading +5.6V and -5.02V. Seems hot to me. Not plugging it in till I can resolve these power issues. Suggestions welcome. This is my first game I've had to futz with at this level.
 
rotary sticks

These sticks are generally a pain to work with once they have been used for many years. The internal rotary switches tend to get worn or dirty and they stop registering the clicks in order and instead 'skip' along.
