How feasible would it be to port an SNES game to Neo Geo MVS? I'm about to start on a rom hack but having it for Neo Geo would be much easier to put it into a cabinet. Would I need to completely start over from the ground up?

Sounds like you'd limit the games you could play based on the buttons you have available in an mvs cab. Interesting thought though!

I never found a decent button setup on mame machines I've built, I'll follow this ....

No clue how this would work. Develop an SNES emulator that could run on MVS hardware?

Mainly what I want to do is change a few things in Zombies Ate My Neighbors to make it a bit more cabinet friendly. I feel like I would not be the only one who would enjoy it and more people have Neo Geo than a jamma SNES.

SNES CPU - Ricoh 5A22 @ 21.47mhz
MVS CPU - M68k @ 12mhz

SNES Audio Processor - SPC700 + Custom DSP
MVS Audio Processor - Z80 + YM2610

The SNES also has 32x the RAM allotted to the audio hardware, 64kb to the MVS 2kb. Twice the main system memory, 128kb to the MVS 64kb.

To be blunt...you'd have to emulate, and you can't emulate 1 system on a system that is less powerful than it. Even if things were reversed, it's still just not that simple considering the hardware is totally different.

I looked a little bit more into it last night and I think the Genesis is a better match since it also uses the 68k and a Z80.

Still not going to happen due to memory limitations, it also has more RAM than the Neo. It also has two sound CPUs, that while they are YM series, are newer.

I hate bursting your bubble here, but this is pure fantasy...you'd need to completely rewrite the code, not hack assembled ROMs.
Even if the memory was on par, you're talking different maps due to how it's allocated...and a whole bunch more differences, no matter how minor would throw things off.

Impossible. Or rather, not impossible, but far beyond the abilities and resources of anyone involved in this discussion.

sounds like a headache. If you're a crazy expert you might be able to bootleg up an MVS cart that contains a SNES emulator and run roms of the games. A Neo Geo MVS is very different from an SNES internally so just wring something to take SNES carts won't work.

Another option for an arcade hack might be just to find a Nintendo Super System and get it to run SNES games...

Then again what do I know? I'm just a guy with a million dumb ideas and not enough knowhow to actually do things like that.

You know, if you're an ambitious person there's probably a solid niche audience that would love new, officially licensed Neo-Geo games.

I remember there being big demand for the last King of Fighters and Metal Slug games that were officially released.

If anyone is that ambitious, there are a few places I could recommend for info and possibly tools.

http://www.neogeocdworld.info/ - French site, translate it...centered on the Neo CD, but the hardware is the same at the basic level so it'll get you started.

I'm not sure what's out there for dev tools, the dev kits were not available to ANYONE permanently, they were rented from SNK.

I'll try to make this clear again though..."hacking" or converting roms is IMPOSSIBLE. Emulating? IMPOSSIBLE...end of story.
