I am looking to complete a sepcial little project to allow standard nes and snes controller to be plugged into a different peice of harware (dream cast)running nes roms, inside an nes case. I want tp be able to plug an nes or nes controller into it properly. Instead of dc controller, with out hacking nes pad into dc controller via paralell outputs before the shift register. What other shift register or chip might one use to decode the shift register signal, back to paralell outputs. I know some shift registers can simply be reversed and run one way and the other. Also curious what other parts I would need in the circuit to generate the clock signal or whatever it is called, that goes out to the nes controller.
No I can't hack it usb , usb does not work natively on dc.

To get your end result I think you'd be happier just buying an NES multi cart. Less work and hassle and simliar/same result. It might not have 700 games but they have a lot.

That said...to answer your question, something like a 74LS (or HC) 595 would probably decode the serial data from the NES controller back to parallel, but you'd definitely need a chip from a DC controller or something like an arduino as the DC polls the controller serially and gets several chunks of information. In addition the 595 will not provide the clock signal to read the data but you could use something like a 555 for that.

Perfect
Didn't realize that a 555 cmos timer would do something like that, figures, they are already usefule for every other last thing!
