My SmashTV occasionally — usually if it's been off for some time (like weeks) — gives me 5 Williams "bongs" right when it's powered on, then goes into the self-test where all chips test good, then I get the normal bong during the self test, and the final one when the STV title screen loads.

If I power cycle it, or it's been powered on recently I don't get those initial 5 bongs.

My search-fu is failing me and I can't find anything in the manual. Anyone know what it's trying to tell me?

so the video game manuals don't say, but in accordance to pinball 5 tones indicates bad U22 rom. I would press all the socketed chips down, those sound boards still used single wipe sockets.

Smash TV sound test itself is anemic. it has no error code legend.

Thanks! I'll give it a try. The self test indicates all chips are good and the game seems to play fine but I'll give everything a poke.

the sound board operates independent of the CPU board. there is no chip test for the sound board. it plays tones to report errors.
