A Smash TV I'm working on was having some sound issues - sounds played, but they were not the correct ones. Otherwise, gameplay was perfect.

I replaced the EPROMS U4, U19 and U20 on the sound board with newly flashed ones, plugged it back in, and now I'm getting a Custom Chip U99 error, and the game is far worse off. Crap! (note that I re-swapped the EPROMS to the original set and the new errors persist).

See photo - the image is confined to the corners of the screen only and is corrupted. It accepts credits and the controls work in game, but the sounds are still playing incorrectly to boot. Here's a clip of gameplay:

Can the U99 be replaced? Mine is socketed, so if I can find one from a gracious KLOVer, maybe?

Could something else be going on?

u99 typically can be replaced but can be glued or soldered into the socket, you may be able to use a u99 from a high impact board as a replacement. you can also try squeezing the crap out of u99 and seeing if that reseats it.

What luck! I have a working High Impact board set. I'll try swapping it out and see what that does. Thanks for the tip. Yeah, I've already squeezed the snot out of it and its in as far as it will go. So I fear that its toast.

Ugh. The U99 on my High Impact board is soldered in. My soldering skills are not nearly strong enough to do the work of swapping it out. So I decided to do a complete EPROM swap from the Smash board into the High Impact board.

On boot, the U99 now tests fine. Yay! But I'm getting ROM errors on 6 of the swapped EPROMS at U107, U108, U96, U97, U112, U113. I tried removing and replacing three of these, pushing them in super snugly, but they are still erroring out. Photo here:

I seem to recall a friend of mine telling me that while you can swap the ROMs on the boards and it will work in a Smash, there is some jumpering you have to do.

Does anyone know if this is true? If so, what do I need to do to get my Smash ROMs working in the High Impact board? They seem nearly identical in architecture, but there are some very minor differences.
