Smart Plugs in the Arcade

Due to privacy concerns, I'm not to keen on cloud-based voice assistants either, that's why I've chosen to use Home Assistant. (Perhaps that is one reason why @64B1T chose it too?)
Yep. Privacy. I run no voice assistants in the house other than those I've rolled my own. (Or HA's... Hoping it gets better)

I use a mixture of WiFi and Zigbee, depending on the application. The only reason I have zigbee plugs is they also serve as repeaters for all the sensors I have on the zigbee network.

My setup is also mostly ubiquiti, though I have YiHack and Wyze V2 Hack cameras, off the shelf switches, and dell servers (plus a dedicated NUC for my HA installation)

I tried the Amazon Smart Plugs (figured an Amazon device would work best with Alexa). I was wrong. I had to take them all out.

I had a bunch of different game banks set up and made a routine to turn the banks on one by one, etc, etc. Only worked about 20% of the time by voice. For example, I would say "Alexa, turn on game bank 1", and she'd return with "I couldn't find game bank 1"... when it was clearly there on the app... and 10 minutes before this, she turned on game bank 1 with no issues. Same thing for shutting stuff down. Some banks would turn off and others would remain on. Very frustrating, so I took all the smart plugs out just went back to turning the games on at the breaker panel.

I still have the two dozen or so smart plugs and use them in other areas around the house and they work fine. Just couldn't get it to work properly with the games, unfortunately.

I have been using these for a couple of years with Alexa controlling them. They never turn on by themselves but sometimes do not respond. It is not much and usually right after the power has been off and they have been looking for the router before it has time to boot up. I would recommend them.

ive got mine set up on smart plugs, but right now im just using the timers, so they go on automatically.

as soon as late Friday afternoon comes, the fans spin up and everything lights. it's one of the best "hello to the weekend" you can buy.

It's weird telling some non-living thing to do something for you, but I've seen it in action. It works. Honestly, not a fan of the whole HAL9000 thing though. I like my manual shenanigans.
