Picked up this bad boy today. It was in the junkroom of an operating arcade... he said it mostly works just a problem with the claw?

Clean Sweep 30" with the wrong marquee thing? I'll try to get it resurrected and we'll see if it can earn again! mwuhaha.

It was at one time working with a card reader it seems, so I'll have to get it back to coins and bills? Or save it for a new location that has a card system? This one appears to be a 7th gen? I am new to this machine so I will need to figure a lot out. If you have a clean sweep marquee for this machine, I would buy it.

Tore into the machine pretty deep. The motherboard and pcb cage were partially disassembled and needlessly tangled up in the bottom. I got everything rerouted properly and screwed down. This required pulling the whole playfield off to get to the back area though. Quite a headache.

I took apart the gantry and I found the string for raising and lowering the claw was caught up pretty good inside of this metal shaft. I had to take it apart to get the string unstuck. I then cleaned it with a pipe cleaner and isopropyl. Then I used another clean pipe cleaner and sprayed it with a light coat of silicone lubricant and just gave that shaft a very light brushing.

Then I noticed that the switch for going home in the front position wasn't being activated. One of the shafts is missing the E clip on it and one of the wheel things had worked its way out of place so the whole carriage was not riding true to the rails. I adjusted it into place and it fixed that problem, but it still needs a replacement E clip or it could and probably will happen again.

The last problem I know about is that the claw is not raising correctly? If it's down when the machine is turned on it raises it no problem... but during the game every time after you try to pick up something as it's trying to raise up it makes a weird grinding noise and doesn't really move much. Eventually it gives just up. I might have to tear it apart more to see what is grinding? Not sure if it's something that can be fixed or I need a replacement?

Check the gear teeth on the string pully shaft. Probably stripped.

Also whatever grease smart used back in the day would dry out and act like a glue and would seize up the shaft.

I think it is the shaft is seized because it hasn't been operating recently. I don't understand why it picks up the claw easily sometimes but not in the middle of the game though? It also seems that I was wrong about a missing e clip. the front two wheels are held on with set screws and the back two are held on with e clips.

There's two motors with worm gears on them. one controls the string raising and one controls the forwards/backwards motion? I turned the worm gears with a screwdriver and neither seemed seized? but it could be when it's in the machine with the claw down there's some kind of odd torque on it?

I will keep debugging it... I'm hoping I don't need to find replacement motors.

Look at the pressed gear on the trolley pully shaft ( not the motor) it should be flat across the teeth. these develop a notch in them where the motor shaft gear engages it causing them to skip.

These cranes also developed internal brakes in the wire harnesses for the bridge and trolley. Try moving the crane to differing points in the playfield and see if it works in one spot.

Very nice find. Not a bad looking crane. I've had some crane motors that would also chatter and slip. It turned out that the fiber worm wheel got worn.

In case you are interested I have a bunch of parts for the Elaut Candy man crane. I have the crane itself, motors, CPU (not working), etc. I have them on ebay at this time. You might want to take a look there to see the pictures.

Coinopdirect makes a great point about broken wires in the harness. I've had that happen a few times in my AGE candy cranes. I think that the wires were made up of 7 strands of a smaller gauge wire. I would troubleshoot with a meter as I bent and moved the wires. I stripped the insulation of a bad wire and saw that each of the seven strands had broken at different places. Sometimes the wire would move to where enough strands were now open and the game didn't behave properly. I used very flexible instrument lead wire to replace the bad section. There is wire that is more flexible and have more strands. Sometimes you can use marine wire since it is used for high vibration applications. It cost more, but it is good stuff and won't corrode. That could be helpful if you are near the coast.

I have looked when you say you have something on ebay and I can never find it? I looked for elaut and didn't see anything from you... just a bruce1arcade who I have bought stuff from before.

I pulled the crane gantry and harness out again. I did find a single wire (green insulation) that was having some jumping resistance values so I think there could have been a break in it. I removed 90% of the middle of the wire and replaced it with new 22ga. I was debating if I should solder or crimp the connections since it's always moving... decided to go with solder and zip ties around the soldered area to prevent bending.

I then started taking apart the shaft that is driven by the motor and it is very much seized up. The motor was able to move it as I suspect that it is strong and intended to pick up a few grams of product... plus the claw and string weight, but the bad noise was definitely being caused by physical resistance on this shaft. When I got the teeth of the gear unengaged with the motor I could barely spin it with my fingers. So at this point I'm tearing down the body to remove the whole shaft. I'm going to clean that area out well and lubricate it with silicone. I am pretty sure once the shaft is free to spin the motor will be able to raise the claw now...

Thanks for the input so far everyone, it was a big time saver.

and yes, that was the problem. it's overall still kind of slow imo, but it at least works now! I think I might need to spend a day completely disassembling both parts of the gantry and cleaning them like I did for the string drawing motor/shaft.

Here's some before/after pics of the shaft that I am talking about.

as @coinopdirect mentioned the lubricant used by Smart turns into a mess causing the shaft to seize. I removed the axle completely and I used a degreaser and a brass brush to clean it off as well as the gear teeth. Then I used the silicone spray to lubricate the shaft and gears where there's metal on metal. Silicone lasts a long time and it's technically edible.

I think all that is left now is more cleaning. The electrical system is all working. I guess I could replace the rope lights if I cared enough. I do want to find a clean sweep marquee for it. I will have to check in with Smart to see if they have one?

I've got the cab mostly cleaned up now. I put a 2 mech coin plate on it and a mars dba. So this thing is basically ready to go to location? Except... I can't seem to change the coin settings... I'm frustrated that I can't find the manual for the 7th gen and I don't know the dip switch settings. There's 24 dips and they're not the same as previous gens?

I will try to map out the dip switches I guess... it's worth it because you can't really run a candy crane at $0.25 anymore.

I decided i'm just going to rock the Candy Crane marquee as is and not seek out a clean sweep one. It's clearer I think if I am going to put candy in it... I don't love the art but it is at least Smart branded like the cabinet. Also easiest solution/path of least resistance.

So it was really difficult to tell what the dip switches were doing? It seems like the first dip switch controls a left or right side home position?! never seen that before.

I was able to figure out at least how to control the game length and the amount of coins per credit! They're both in the second bank of dip switches:

Bank 2 Dip 3 and 4 control price:
00 $0.25
10 $.5
01 $1
11 freeplay

Bank 2 Dip 7 and 8 control game length
00 20
10 25
01 30
11 35

Hope this helps someone in the future!

Here's some photos of it with the restoration complete. I cleaned it inside and out and I'm ready for it to go back on location. She cleaned up real nice if you ask me. I think putting the coin and dba acceptor on it, it looks real good. I do wish the rope light was fully working, but also realize that getting it replaced is a lot of work actually and it's probably just not worth it.
