I recently picked up a Raiden DX board, and while the game works perfectly for the most part, I have noticed a light audio crackling that is audible when there is no other sound being played. It's not a big deal now, but if possible, I'd like to get this fixed up before it becomes any worse. I'm thinking of trying a cap replacement, but that's all I can think to do at this time. Anyone got other suggestions? I have looked over the board and connections and all appear solid.

First post,

Welcome to klov.

Look for bad caps, The electrolytic ones. The are the can type and can have axial leads or since this is a newer board radial. If any are bulged at the top they are probably bad and should be replaced.

You really need access to a scope to actually see the signal to know if it is a problem or not. I can also be the amp but since it is working I don't think that is your problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't notice any bulging on the caps, everything else seems alright. I'll just keep an eye on it for a bit I suppose and see if anything else crops up.

Inspecting caps for visual damage is useless. I would recommend recapping the board if you don't have an ESR meter, although it's not necessarily the problem it's well worth ruling out.

not true;

I fixed a flat screen tv yesterday that had 2 bad caps. they were under rated for the application. I could see they over heated and bulged. I knew this was going to be the problem when I seen they were rated at 10vdc on a circuit that can have 12-14 volt spikes.

Of course these are newer boards so you may be right.

I'm not saying you can NEVER identify bad caps by looking at them, but in the majority of cases it is absolutely useless. In fact I have never seen a single leaking/bulging cap on any game boards.

+1

but you are talking about game boards and not flat screen tv's. Game boards were made when the technology was new and they used the correct voltage rated parts then. Today they will use lower voltage caps 10vdc instead of the 16vdc caps to save half of a cent. But if you x's that by 10,000 you might save some money.
