Skee Ball Model S - How does Free Play work exactly?

I got a Skee Ball Model S a while back. I'm just getting around to getting it slightly restored. I noticed in the dip switches there is an option to turn Free Play on/off. I couldn't tell what it was supposed to do because the previous owner rigged up the wiring to give a free game by pressing a special button.

How exactly does Free Play work since there isn't a "start button". I think with Skee Ball, the balls are released to you when you put in a quarter/credit. If no credits are required in Free Play, then how does the machine know when to release the balls to the new player for free?

I wired a button into mine to activate the solenoid. There are three wires attached to the coin mech. I bypassed that and have a yellow arcade button you push to activate the machine. Works great. I dont know how to do it any other way. Never looked into it any further, because I dont mind modding my stuff.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I wasn't interested in turning on Free Play on my Skee Ball since the previous owner already added a button that simply starts a new game. I was mostly curious how it would work on a normal, non-modded game.

I think you are confusing "free play" with "free game". Skee-Ball has no free play option, just wire a button up in place of the coin rocker switch and that's your free play. the "free game" dip switch option would award a free game for scoring high points in a game.
