Hey all,

I've got a bit of a problematic game on my hands. Long and short of it is, gun trigger works fine and is detected, however upon entering calibrate for the gun it doesn't detect where the gun is pointing.
It uses an act labs light gun, which for their time were decent and I have some spare parts to throw in, like another act labs gun (however it's a home use gun). Checked and tried a different usb port, made sure the parallel port was set to EPP 1.7 and still no dice.

Any pointers?

My gut tells me its the "ESD" board between the gun and the cabinet. I don't think it would be software related.

Is this on route, or in your home?

If it's on route, look in the gun barrel. Jerks put gum in there.

Otherwise, if it isn't, it could be the ESD board, or a problem with the wiring. I'd ring every wire between the gun and the game first to look for broken or high resistance wires (nearly broken).

At the arcade I'm employed at.

Checked the lens, no obstructions thankfully. (Kids are monsters sometimes)
I'll try ringing them out and see if there's something up. Noobie mistake, should've done that first.

I'll update once I get the chance to do so

I don't have an ESB board but it worked without it if I recall correctly. (Mine is down at the moment due to monitor needing to be fixed and the hard drive getting stuck at loading Joshua kernal).

Did you try hooking up the home version of the gun directly to the act labs module? On some guns the calibrate button is right on them so you can go straight to calibrate without doing the menu (again, if I recall correctly!).

Otherwise if it's just the white screen flashing when you pull the trigger then most likely it's your Act Labs module. But if you think it's the EsD board, just wire the gun right up to the module, it isn't essential to play the game. To my understanding, the ESD board is there to prevent the act labs module from damage from static discharge. Again, I'm not the most knowledgeable since I haven't had the game working for very long and that was several months ago.

If you decide to call it quits with your game I'll take whatever parts ya' got! 😉 j/k (but only sort of!) 😜 Good luck!

P.s. if anyone has the Joshua os and game restore discs lemme know. I heard that works better for whatever than just remimaging the hard drive. Working on re-imaging my drive, so I'll post those results when I get it done.

Beeped out the harness from gun to esd, everything seems good. Same with the esd board, all the diodes appear to be functioning as expected.

We do have another couple of the act labs modules (I think more home units) on the way so I think you're right @Bobwiley , probably a faulty module. The one I have in house we harvested a new lens and trigger out of a couple years ago so its a little unusable for the moment.

Yes, you can run it without the ESD board... it's just there to add protection. Regarding your problem, it could be the Act Labs module, the gun itself, or even the monitor. If you haven't already, try turning the brightness up a bit... even where it's too high, and see if it improves. Also, it doesn't work well in sunlight... when I have arcade parties, I move my SGS from the garage to the (covered) front porch (too big to drag into the house). I have to put up shades or the gun doesn't work.

I've got all the discs... I'd be glad to share whatever you need. IIRC last we talked you mentioned that you currently have the Windows version, which may have a different dongle, so the Joshua version might not work. But yes, I tried cloning my HDD to SSD and it wouldn't boot, but I had no problem putting the fresh SSD into the system and installing from CDs.

>try turning the brightness up a bit. < Turn it up a LOT, like really white out that screen and try it, also make sure you're in a slightly darken space, if you have a ton of light behind you on that monitor it will f' with the recognition.

You wrote that you see the problem in calibrate mode, what happens during game play? Assume you get that white flash, but you likely dont hear a gun shot being fired. If you dont hear the shot sound then it's not registering. Helps point the way. It's not the Joshua ESD board, that's just to prevent a shock from the gun to the game, ESD prevention. Never had one bad, that did anything to prevent the gun from registering, always either the Act labs module or the monitor. And, yes, you can't mix the old disks and the new Joshua stuff, once you upgrade the cabinet to the Joshua stuff, you have to install the new s/w. The dongle should have an LED light on it if it's working when the game is powered, if that's out, you could have a bad dongle, but not in this case since you are in calibrate mode, just an FYI.

Oh, and btw, check out this thread

Thanks for the leads. Managed to wire up the second sensor unit to the cabinet and tested it. However it gave me the same outcome, white flash with no shot sound and no gun mark.

Also swapped in a different sensor board in the gun itself and that too didn't change anything.

Turn the brightness WAY up on the monitor and get close to the screen and fire the gun. If you've changed the ACT labs unit and the sensor board then, look at the monitor.
