Site Traffic, Use Stats, & The Rise of Mobile - Jan 2012

OUR VISITORS:

68% if our visitors (and higher of you count just our most active users and forum members) are male. A decade ago, our visitors tended to be younger, poorer, and less educated that the Internet average. At that time, arcade enthusiasts, along with the upper middle class, tended to be strong early adopters of the Internet. In recent years, our site has expanded to include early arcade, pinball, and electro-mechanical games. Additionally, the nature and ages of our visitors have changed, and many more Americans are on-line. As such, the ages, wealth, and education of our visitors now fairly well match the national average.

GENERAL SITE USE:

Traffic to our site continues to grow. The main site draws the majority of visitors. As of January 2012, about 1 in 3 (34%) of our visitors stop by the forums, and 1 in 9 (11%) visit the flyer archive, flyers.arcade-museum.com. Between 130,000 and 150,000 people visit the site each month, and between 85,000 and 100,000 of them come from the U.S. These visitors account for over 100,000 daily page views.

The following four areas generate just over 20% of our total U.S. monthly visitors: San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose, New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Of U.S. visitors, almost 13% are in California, 6% in Texas, and 6% in Georgia.

In January 2012, the site received visitors from 244 countries, ranging from the U.S. (67%), Canada (4%), the UK (4%) and Germany (3%), to far away lands including Iran, Iraq, and Guam. And if Syria, the Reunion Islands, and Brunei isn't exotic enough, 67 visitors browsed the site over a satellite phone.

MOBILE USE:

Rising quickly than we expected, 12% of our U.S. traffic and 11% of our total traffic now comes from web browsers on mobile devices (like iPads). These numbers do not include mobile applications like Tapatalk. Leading our mobile traffic, we have about 6,000 monthly mobile visitors from the U.S., about 400 from the UK, about 200 from Canada, about 200 from Germany, and about 100 from Australia. About 1,700 of our monthly mobile visitors stop by the message forums, and about 200 stop by the flyer archive. Apple iOS devices are responsible for 63% of our mobile page views, Android 34%, and all other devices add up to approximately 3%.

Our Average Mobile visitor visits 3.2 times per month (3.7 U.S. visitors) and views 17 pages per visit.

FORUM USE:

As has always been the case, the majority of message forum visitors read but do not post. There are about 1700 active posters, a number that is growing slowly since we implemented some gatekeepers ("get a recommendation or donate") on joining the forums. As a result of these security measures, our new membership is largely balanced with our attrition. We tend to lose members that were not particular active, and gain new members that are more enthusiastic. Thus our volume of new threads and posts continue to rise.

January 2012 was particularly strong for the forums. We broke records for our forums in several categories, including, total number of members, total number of members posting, total number of threads, and total number of posts. The number of new posts was up 8% month to month and also over the previous January, while the number of posts was up nearly 10% month to month and 20% over the previous January.

As the forum system grows, its needs get more complex, and the management of same continues to evolve. We are looking at ways to bring more users into the 'management' of the forums. Additionally, we have also begin to evaluate a couple new member suggestions for new sections, including "local" geographical sections (in liu of the relatively hidden "Social Groups" features), and a section specifically for our regular forum-loved venders.
