Jax / Site mash search engine: craigs list cease and desist:

(i posted similar on RGP - i think this is important!)

For those that use it - very interesting (and disheartening!):

For those that dont know about it - you just go to site mash pinball or arcade,
and see all the recent related ads posted across the country for Ebay
and CL. Type a game name, and get that filtered list (now, you just
get ebay listings - not as good as CL IMO).

Wow. I havent looked into the legality of it, but sounds completely
uncalled for / unfair / unjust - how can Craigs list stop a "mash"
lookup across their public ads?

In any event, anyone else have a suggested search means? All i want to
do is see what Pin or arcade related stuff is out there across the country.
Thanks.

Did Jaxed let you do a true nationwide search? It's been a while since I checked but I tried to use SearchTempest and a few others once to find something nationwide and was not able to do it.

If this could do it then perhaps that's why the sent the C&D letter. I think they are trying to keep it as a local resource only.

This is really nothing new. Craigslist have been total <bleep>s about people aggregating their data (to do wide area searches or whatever) for ever.

I don't know what these guys did with the data exactly (so I don't know if CL has any real case here), but these guys can't afford to go to court to force the issue, so CL wins (whether they deserve to or not).

In the past I know that CL has long been in the habit of changing things to break aggregators. Looks like they've got some other tactics as well.

This is really nothing new - lots of sites that aggregate CL data have come and gone over the years. Find a new one and move on.

Yeah, I have been using CraigsPro Plus for my Ipod/Iphone for almost a year now, and it works great. Just plug in your keyword, set your locations to look, and it does the rest. I have got a few decent deals using this. It certainly beats going from Craigslist site to another to search...

Thanks everyone. I figured there were others out there, i was just so happy with Jaxed. I tried Tempest and am immediately used to it - works well.

Interesting story though.

My guess would be that first and foremost, them C/D'ing sites likes these does what was said earlier: attempts to keep the dealings local, which helps prevent people from getting scammed, because let's face it. PEOPLE. ARE. DUMB.

Second, those aggregater services don't pull bandwidth from nowhere. I know for the most part we're talking about very small data sets, as 99% of CL is text, but got to wonder how often they're pulling a complete snapshot of the entire shebang....could add up pretty quick. =|

Sadly, I can't argue with the dumbness factor. People ARE pretty frickin stupid sometimes.
