I have a upright Sinistar that previously had a CPU board issue. I got a replacement thru YellowDog here on KLOV. I was able to have the Sinistar up and running for about two days and now it has a vertical hold issue. On the Sinistar since it has a vertical oriented monitor the screen was rolling from left to right. It started off rolling fast in that direction. I adjusted the vertical hold and sometimes can get it to stop, but most of the time it will be off center as can be seen in the picture. I have adjusted the vert position but usually that will not adjust far enough to get back to center. It will start creeping again after a short time anyway. After every power up, it will be in a different spot, or rolling again.

The monitor is a WG 19K4951. I tried reseating the connections, did not help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help.

I have not done a cap kit on this chassis yet. Do cap kits resolve a vertical scrolling issue like this?

Cap kits resolve any number of issues with monitors. It's a standard procedure most all of us do after obtaining an arcade game. It will improve the overall reliability and picture of your monitor. I'm sure there's a youtube video out there how to do one.

Thank you for your reply mjenison. I pulled the chassis out last night, upon further inspection, I could tell that it must of had a cap kit done at some point in the last couple years. I have done cap kits on some of my other games. Everything looked really good on the board. While I had it out I worked on all the adjustment pots not just the vertical hold or position one. I reinstalled the chassis, powered it back on, and could not believe the picture was front and pretty much center. I let it run for an hour and the picture was stable. I should have time this weekend to let it run several hours. I hope that is all it needed.

The picture is exactly how it powered up after randomly exercising all the adjustment pots on the main chassis, I know I could not do that twice.

Unfortunately, I have to revive this thread. After letting the Sinistar run for 8 hours the rolling issue has returned. So, I installed a cap kit, and resoldered the vertical hold adjustment. I put it back in the Sinistar, and I still have the same problem! Does anyone know what causes the vertical roll like I keep experiencing? Since it is a Sinistar, it rolls from left to right or right to left. One other thing I noticed, is if you make any other adjustments with any adjustment Pot it affects the vertical hold too. Sometimes it helps and other times it will start creeping over again.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Dokert,

Those are two that help make a difference, but it can only hold the picture steady for a short time, than it starts creeping again. Or if you turn it off and on again it will be rolling upon start up. With the vertical hold adjustment, there is only a tiny spot on the adjuster, that will get it to stop rolling. Should I change out the Vertical Hold and Vertical Damp pots? If so, does anyone know the values of those two so I can buy replacement ones?

Yes, change out those pots. Bob Roberts has them.

Does anyone know the values for those? I can not tell by looking at them on the chassis. I would like to get them locally if possible.

Thanks Dokert, just what I needed. I did find VR301 on the Replacement Parts List in the PDF Monitor File but I could not find VR302's value on the manual. I was thinking that one was 2K marked as VR201.

Ok, still have the same problem!!! I replaced both pots (Vertical Hold & Vertical Damp). Even if I adjust it just right, using vert hold, vert damp, & vert size - once it is turned off and on again, it will pull up off center or start rolling again. Using the Vert Hold there is still a very small window where it will stay still. I was hoping the new pot (variable resister) would of increased that window. You still have to adjust it just right for it to stop rolling/moving, then after that it will usually be off center requiring more adjustment to get it to the center of the screen. Then after all that, if you shut it off, you will need to do it all over again.

Any ideas? (I replaced all caps, vert hold & vert damp pots, reflowed solder)

Do you have another game you can test the monitor in? Might be a Board issue and not the monitor.

I had a little time today to work on it. I did some more research and found that the syncs can cause issues with rolling on other monitors that people had swapped around between cabinets. I did not swap out the monitor this is how it came, and it did originally work until I ran it for several hours - that is when it developed the rolling problem.

Today, I worked on the connections originally to the chassis - still no help. Then I worked on the monitor output connections on the PCB. At first everything was out of wack. After playing with it a little more, it will now actually try to center itself. When I adjusted the vertical size, it did start to roll again, but after further adjustments it did center and has a good picture. I am going to clean the connectors at the pcb and run it again for a long period of time. I hope that is what the problem was. I am able to turn it off and on and it will center itself like it should.

I am guessing that maybe after running for a long period the connection at the pcb would get too much resistance from the bad connection and the heat generated during that time, causing the syncs to not make a good contact.

Right now I have a nice picture and it is where it should be! I hope it lasts.
