I recently got a Sinistar cockpit as a project so that I could learn more about fixing games. I'm lucky that some great KLOVers nearby are helping me out. I do have two cosmetic/cabinet issues, however, that I wanted to ask about here still.

The "hood" of the cockpit lifts up, but the lift supports from back in the early 1980s are totally shot. I picked up a pair of lift supports that are 14 lbs. of pressure each, but I'm thinking that might still be too much pressure. Any thoughts on what I should use to replace the lift supports, and where to get them?

Second, and this could be a bigger problem affecting the answer to the question above, the wood is split on the right side of the cabinet, just below where the lift support attaches onto the hood. It seems like any excess pressure on the hood then pushes the wood on the cabinet up into the T-molding. I tried to show it in the attached picture. (The horizontal wood is just under the hood, which is up in the picture, and I show what a little extra pressure does to the wood on the side.) Any thoughts on how to fix that?

Thanks for the help, and please let me know if any of this is not clear.

I got to play one of the Sinistar Cockpits back in the day at the Brementowne Mall, in Tinley Park. It was loud when the game said "RUN HUMAN - ARRRRRRRRRR!"

Unfortunately, the Op never let me look inside the games, so I don't know what to tell you.

eric, try posting a picture a little farther back. It's hard to tell unless you own one of these to know what your talking about.

I finally got around to taking pictures of the cabinet from a bit of a distance and then getting closer up to show what is wrong when pressure is put on the cabinet as the hood goes up with any pressure.

The top part of the cabinet seems to detach from the lower part. Thanks for the feedback so far, as I'm open to any and all thoughts on how to fix this.

Thanks again.

Are you saying that the top piece of plywood is not secure to the 2 side pieces? If that is the case, you can simply screw some 1" L brackets to tie the top to the sides. If you are trying to keep the game looking all original - then use wood glue where it is loose and a bar clamp that reaches from one side to the other, remove clamp when glue is cured and its repaired!
