Simpsons Free Play ROM Hack

Yeah, I don't have a simpson's or a TMNT but thank you, The ArcadeSD programmer would only be compared to you dogp.

Do you have a list of all the 4P Konami games? I know there are several somewhat obscure ones. I certainly don't expect to do them all though... the hacks generally take a while to do.DogP

TMNT
X-Men
C.O.W.boys of Moo Mesa
Bucky O'Hare
Sunset Riders
Simpsons

Awesome work on this and really appreciated!! Who knew this would turn into a summer job huh?!
Heh, I know... if I quit my job, I could probably get them all done this summer. ;)

Crime Fighters
TMNT
Simpsons
X-Men

TMNT
X-Men
C.O.W.boys of Moo Mesa
Bucky O'Hare
Sunset Riders
Simpsons

Come on... you guys can do better than that. ;) Off the top of my head, I can think of: TMNT: TiT, G.I. Joe, Rollergames, and Vendetta. Surely there are more (I think there were some 4P games from the mid 90s too, so I guess it depends where you draw the line).

Hey just wanted to say thanks for the Simpsons 4p free play hack, finally got it put in tonight and worked awesome.

I burned this and put it into my Simpsons last weekend for an arcade expo. Unfortunately it didn't last very long. I'm not sure if the chip failed or if the code did.

Was this ever play-tested with 4 simultaneous players?

Yep quite a bit at my place. What issue did you experience?

Game worked for about an hour or two on the new rom, but then started going into a boot loop where it would fail the rom test.

Put the original rom back in, and the game worked perfectly.

Never saw that before but in all fairness I never played mine for more then a hour before :-/ maybe someone else would know?

I tried the free play ROM. Generally it seems pretty good. I just have a few notes on it:

* If you hit start, but then don't do it again to have a player enter, the game sits on the "press start" character select indefinitely. Having a timeout or an auto-start would be good.

* The game always shows "credits 4" in the lower-right corner. In free play it would be nice to remove this, just to avoid minor confusion and un-needed screen wear.

These are minor complaints, in general this is a great resource to have, so thank you.

I ran this freeplay hack at 2D-Con last summer in MN. The cabinet only lasted about an hour or two on the free play hack before going into a constant reboot loop. Shutting off the game and turning it back on seemed to bring it back for a while, but eventually it would start the reboot loop again. I have a feeling it has something to do with 4-player simultaneous play. Every time it would crash it was after the game was played with 4 players at once.

Maybe someone else can reproduce this issue?

Did you try burning a new ROM? That really sounds like a bad/flaky EPROM to me. On a technical level, it'd be difficult for a bug in the hack to cause the ROM check to fail after a warm reset, but not from a cold reset.

The game has definitely been played with all 4 players quite a bit at my parties... though maybe not for hours on end, like would be typical at a busy convention.

Is there a way to get rid of the "Credits 4" display?
Piece of duct tape over that part of the screen? ;)

But no... the current ROM hack has "Credits 4". It might be possible to remove it with another hack, but I'd need to go back and look at it, which realistically probably won't happen soon.

A shout out and big thanks to DogP for the Simpsons free play ROM.
I installed it on my 4P Simpsons cabinet and it's working great.

Hi guys
Sorry to drag up an old post

But ive just done this mod.
Wrote and verified ok
But im stuck in a boot loop that reports a bad rom checksum.

Also i noticed on our simpsons in the test menu
I don't have 7. Start button settings
On ours 7. Is the coin.game options.

In mame i use the same rom i burnt and it popped up checksum error
But booted up ok on command line and the mod was fine.
In this romset i tested with mame
Thesimpsons.rar (world set 1)
I had the 8 options in the test menu !!

So im definately running some different version.

My next question is this, if i use the world set 1
And burn the 4 roms that are in sockets will it convert me to the correct version to use the freeplay mod ?

Thanks

Dave

Yep, sounds like you've got a different version... simply burning the correct program ROMs will convert it to the "World 4 Player" (simpsons MAME ROM) set. Based on what looks like M13 on the sticker, you've probably got the simpsons4pe ROM set, which should only need 13C replaced with 072-j13.13c from the simpsons ROM set. The ROMs at 16C (G02) and 17C (G03) should be the same as yours.

Much appreciated 👍
Will try it next week in down time

Thanks

Dave

EDIT
Burnt both roms in 15c with your freeplay
And 13c with world romset dump
All up and running

Thanks for your hard work ;)

Just need to do our 4p turtles now :)
