I was wondering if anyone has come up with a simple - fast loading - mame solution? It would be great to be able to have a non os front end loaded on a flashcard that would boot right up to a game. For example a problematic game like pole position. I know there is the arcadeshop board that is close to this, but why hasnt someone come up with another board that is more versitile - or compatible?

If you know what you're doing, it can be done for free.

My Mame cab runs Windows XP, and from powered off to in the front end to choose a game is exactly 29 seconds.

BYOAC has some great info on TinyXP, which could boot even quicker than my setup (I don't use it since I have modern games as well)

tiny xp still works with modren games as well
its mainly just striped of all the crap like the ms games and word pad, note pad ,and other not need win apps
you may have to install the .nets but for most frontends you need them anyway

I have .Net and anti-virus, wireless internet, etc and that's why I didn't go the TinyXp route, but that is a cheap and easy way to get an infinitely configurable system that ultimately you can make exactly the way you want, and not be locked into a setup of the xxx -n- 1 stuff.

i have been using lastxp 2.2 for my mame builds its kinda a little fancy (has a bunch of themes and skins built in)but it has every driver for pretty much anything (so far i have mot had to search for one after install) and it comes pre activated,is an unattended install and also installs all the .nets(wich you need for most frontends) and hotfixes up to 2009 (gives you everyhting excpt the crappy malitous software crap thatv does nothing more than check your pc for blacklisted cd keys and wga hacks)

the main downside is its a dvd install disc

as for frontends go for gameex its dummy prof they also have a great instant sheler ap that does all the work of hiding windows for you

i know most here preffer mala or hyper spin but for a beginer gameex is fool prof install it and your ready to play

Why not boot to dos with an early build that auto starts the game of choice?

Not going to get any faster than that.

I have my mame cab set to go into standby mode when I push the power button. It takes about 5 seconds to return from standby. I would never go back to booting from scratch!

You will not get an instant on mame cab like how the arcadeshop pcb starts it is just not possible.
unless someone has created a computer that can eliminate the time it takes to POST to be 1 second and time to boot OS and menu for game system to 1 sec. I am bet this has not been done yet.
