I'm looking for some advice. I have a Taito Space Invaders Part 2 upright... the red one... and the sides have some deep scratches and chips here and there. I understand the sideart is vinyl, but what I want to do is fill in the chips and scratches then paint.

Any advice, or has anyone had experience of doing something similar?

Thanks,

Si

Are you certain it is vinyl? I believe the SI's were stenciled.

I would do a color match of the paint and get a fine brush. You could try and have someone recut the stencils for you as well.

Here's a picture or two of mine. You can see from the coin door image that it has been printed... screen print vinyl and not stencil.

Oh, have you seen the blue colour one before?

If it is indeed vinyl, there isn't much you can do to repair gouges and scratches easily. I imagine you could use bondo and lightly sand the affected areas painting with color matched paint, but if it is vinyl, it will never look uniform and will be a wasted effort.

If you plan to completely strip the cabinet and repaint the entire thing, you will have to strip off the vinyl with a heat gun and lots of elbow grease followed by a random orbital sander starting with 60-80 grit. This usually takes out all fine scratches. You can then use bondo on deep gouges/chips and sand the cab with 120 or 220 prior to priming/painting.

Hi Phil. I don't want to remove the artwork... it's 32 years old (same as me) and would rather keep it as original as possible. The scratches aren't too bad, just annoying as I know they are there. I'll find a wee corner at the bottom and test something.

Thanks for the advice.

Good call. If I were you I'd just purchase two new games for either side and you'll never think about it again :D

Someone carved a giant penis in the side of the pac cab I'm restoring and it needed major body work already, so restoration of that one was kind of a no brainer....I do try to keep most games as original as possible(aside from a new CPO and marquee) unless they are beyond hope. It's nice to have a bit of character to a game leaving you to wonder what an exciting life they have lead over the past 30+ years ;)

You'll have to post some results pics if you do decide to touch yours up :)
