Side Project - DK Cabaret Build

Does the monitor work? What type of monitor is it? If it's the same 14" Sanyo as I just finished rebuilding, you can keep it, wash it down and recap it. We'll work out a deal for it.

Good question. Haven't looked at it much. I'll pull it out and check it. As to tearing it all apart, I'd rather not if he wants it back in one piece. I'll add a little glue and some staples for now. Guts, in a box OK?

Guts in a box are OK. Wrap the boards if you could. Owner claims that Tutankham and the Pac clone boards both work, so let's protect them.

BTB, in addition to dead mouse carcasses, wadded up paper, tissue, dirt, dead bugs and mouse turds in the bottom of the cab, there were also several fine nuggets of petrified Cat Poop, so thanks for that. What is it with nerds and cats?

Haha! Nice. Like I said, it was 'untouched.' Sounds like the norm for the past 15 years spent in a pole barn. At least the smell has dissipated a bit, much to my wife's chagrin. Our garage stunk to high heaven for weeks.

You can dispose of the above mentioned jewels. No need to include them in the box. Unless the wadded up paper is actually schematics for a repro Atari yoke. I'll take that.

As to removing the boards, you know he soldered the wires right to the finger boards, right? The edge connectors have been removed, or maybe were never there. He also has quite a bit of random power supply stuff rattling around in there, along with one loose board also flopping around. What a mess. Those 2 double pole switches that he drilled holes for then mounted to the side of the cab are really sweet too.

Control Panels

I dropped these in the mail to you today, the expected delivery date is Monday. The top is my original for comparison. I will leave all the finishing/painting to you:

Holy shit Tighe, nice work. Let me know what I owe you kind sir. Kick ass!

Thanks Phet! I enjoyed making them! I had to pull the panel apart to clean and polish the joystick on mine anyway.

If you wanted to do something for me if you had a spare set of monitor mounting bars for a Galaxian/Galaga/Ms. Pac I could use a set. But don't go out of your way.

So I got one of Tighe's CP blanks sanded, sealed and vinyled over the last 2 days. I installed 9/16" T-molding and will now vectorize the CP and have that printed to go along with a piece of lexan I plan to route to shape using one of these wooden blanks as a pattern. I test fit buttons and joysticks, but will need to find a source for more of the wooden cp hardware, as I am short latch clips, button/micro assemblies with the roller arm, small carriage bolts and some 4 way restrictor plates for the vs. Joysticks I will be using. If anyone has extra CP hardware to sell, PM me. Tighe, thanks again for doing these blanks for me, very impressive work.

Phet! That looks awesome! Great job!!!

If you look at my original panel there is a metal mounting plate that mounts on the top and has bolts that go through the panel for the joystick holes --- You did say that you test fit the joystick -- I don't know if that plate is necessary, is that something you can buy? Or should I see if can make replicas of them?

Mike's Arcade has a bunch of Nintendo CP parts:

I got my 4-way restrictor plate from Mylstar, for some reason my DK had an 8-way plate in it. His site says he has 2 in stock.

The buttons on my DK have roller switches, but the buttons holders that mike's sells don't, but he sells the roller switches separately.

I don't know about how the space firebird panel is made, but you should put vinyl on the angled top of the panel too as it is exposed on the cabaret when it is assembled.

Finally, mail me your buttons, I will send them back to you looking better than new. Mine looked worse than yours, now look at them.

You mean the back angled edge? What does yours have on it? Paint, laminate? I figured it should be bare, wasn't real sure. I can get you a box of buttons if you really wanna clean them up for me. I owe you big time.

Good point! The angled part is has what looks like dark black laquer. The top has glossy black laminate. So you would be right in not putting vinyl there. I would suggest black stain with poly, or black paint.

Sure, send me a box full as long as they are nintendo or midway buttons. I won't polish HAPP buttons since they are still sold and cheap.

I have been sick for the past 4 days and haven't been able to work on anything so I have really enjoyed your threads this weekend! Thanks!

I will post some better photos of my panel here tonight or tomorrow.

phet, that control panel looks gorgeous. i have to ask, what is the fourth button hole for? i see that tighe's panel has the same hole, so was that a factory thing? weird.

I will answer that, yes it is factory, Nintendo must have used the same panel (or planned to) for other cabaret games. I made an exact copy of my panel extra unused button hole and all.

It would be interesting to see if all the DK cabaret panels had that hole. I can tell it was never used because there is no wear in the hole like the others, and there is no screw hole on the back for the switch holder.

Exciting!! I like that you installed leg levelers!

I will be installing magic sliders too, as this machine will be sitting in an area where it will need to be moved to the side every once in a while. I just wanna be able to quick slide it out and back when needed.

Base and floor completed. Now I can finally start building the insides and then attach the outsides. This is going to be a slow project with updates as I have time to get them done.
