I bought some Missile Command side art from Arcadeshop. I just finished putting on the first side and started to peel away the masking.

Unfortunately, it's leaving most of the glue that held the masking to the art on the art, leaving a gluey mess. ACK! THTBBFT!

Has anyone had this problem with Arcadeshop side art before? If so, what did you use to remove the glue without damaging the side art. Also, is there some trick (heating? cooling? voodoo?) that I could use to get the glue to stick to the masking when removing the rest of the masking?

I'd rather get some input before start trying solvents from gentlest to harshest (I guess goo gone would be first).

Please help.

Well, fortunately, Missile Command side art has a LOT of extra material with masking on it (the side art is a big rectangle, the cabinet isn't. So I had a bunch of extra masked art to test with.

First I tried Citrustrip. Very bad. Didn't remove all the glue and did mess up the art.

Second try did the charm...

paint thinner.

Small amount applied to a rag and cleaning off a small section at a time. Cleans the glue off, leaves the art intact. I did a small section of the real art and I'm waiting a few hours to make sure there's no residual effect before doing the whole cab. But there you have it.

No guarantee this will work with any other brand of side art, but for the Missile Command side art that Arcadeshop sells, paint thinner seems to clean up the premask glue without ruining the art. I'll let you know (with pix) when I get the whole thing done.

Just a thought - take some masking tape, lay it across a spot, and see if it will pick off the mess. Kinda like getting lint off of a sweater?

No, the glue is actually on both sides - on the premask and on the art, so it's stuck to the art pretty good. It's not just hangin' around.
