A few more pics to add to this old thread that I "still" say needs a sticky.
Below you'll find photos of Golf 'n' Stuff @ Metrocenter in Phoenix AZ circa
1984 inside and out as well as a photo of Superfun in Paradise Valley Mall
in Phoenix AZ circa 1979. Both were hangouts of mine when I was a kid.

Sportland is on the OC, MD boardwalk. You live in MD

I'm about 10 miles from Union Beach, NJ.. never heard of an arcade there so I assume it's long gone. Keansburg, the next town east on the bayshore still has 5 arcades.. a couple of them still have some of those Exhibit Supply rotary merchandisers from the 30's.

Jilly's in OC, NJ is one of the better arcades on the Jersey shore.. Lots of pinballs (15 or so) and usually a few new games every season.. there are 5 or 6 more arcades in OC, and probably 8 or 10 in Wildwood. The Seaside Heights Boardwalk lost an arcade last year (Central Arcade) and is down to 5 or 6 now, but still has a fairly excellent classic arcade on the south end. Point Pleasant has 4 arcades and Manasquan has a fairly decent arcade for the space they have..

Some of these places are still fairly big, especially in Wildwood.. I can only imagine what they looked like back in the day, they're mostly a disappointment these days (surprised?). I was fairly impressed with Rehoboth Beach's arcades when I visited last year, a couple of them have some cool import games.

I am originally from south jersey and used to vacation every summer in wildwood for years when I was a kid. I am almost certain my parents have pics of me in the arcades back in the 80's. There was no shortage of them back then and I fondly remember a huge one near morays pier that was two buildings long full of games. I'll try to dig them out.

That would be awesome. Can't wait to see them if you are able to dig em up.

Many of the Wildwood arcades are still open! I'll have to look back and see if I took any pics this year - I usually go to Gateway 26 and Lime Ricky's (where the boardwalk doglegs).

Great post. Here's some pics I collected off the web.

Hey- do you know where these are from?
I think this one is from an arcade about 15 minutes outside of Minneapolis. I looked it up while I was there a few years back and visited. The back room still looks like that- pool tables and some pinballs against the wall.

(the Pong was not there :) )

I'll try to find the name of the place.

You sir, are correct :)
That's SS Billiards (Lloyd's Place) http://www.ssbilliards.com/

I've never had the pleasure, but he's a top guy on R.G.P.
cheers

That's the one!
Thanks for the link. I'm glad to see he's still hanging in there.

I'm serious- I recognized the place from being in there once five years ago from a picture taken in 1973.

His website looks like he does OK selling pin/vid stuff at retail prices. I remember the 8-ball deluxe pinball being in play when I was there.

There was a good sized chain based out of Youngstown, OH by the same name, probably had a couple hundred stores.. it was later bought by Pocket Change of Newark, DE which also ran a few hundred mall arcades, the Kahunaville entertainment center chain, and a local street route called Interstate amusement. I still have a bunch of games with "Fun-N-Games" & "P.C. ASSET" aluminum property tags on them.

Somewhere in that mix was a mid-sized chain called Jolly Time.. I think Pocket Change bought them a few years before they bought F-N-G?

Naturally, Namco bought out Pocket Change in '01.

My! do my girls and I miss the Kahunaville that was in the Eastwood Mall (Niles, Ohio) up until a few years ago. Took us about 45 minutes to get there, but we were there often. The first time I went there was with my wife (at the time) and I was stoked that I could drink beer and play games at the same time in public! Nothin like getting a good buzz and trying to put up a good time on an Alpine Racer machine... lol. They had many cool games and pins.
.

Back in the day I believe we had what was called a Fun-N-Games in the Southern Park Mall (Boardman, Ohio). My brother and I would spend all day in there. There was also a Fun N Pizza west of the SPMall that had a bunch of cocktails among others. I played Ikari Warriors there alot!

If any of you get the chance, go to Cedar Point! Not only are the rides sweet, but the arcades are superb. The main arcade has the newer games out front, and the classics and pins in the back. There are other smaller arcade dispersed around the park as well. To be truthful, a few years ago when we went in the spring, they had four Robotrons.. all dead.. But since then there has always been a working one or two, along Q bert, Lunar lander, Stargate, Berzerk, etc.. Amazing really. I would guess that all of the pins there this year were pre-1985, but I could be wrong. Thay actually had two Hercules... lol.

here are some old pinball images

It probably has to do with the fact that pinball was illegal in some states until the early 70's or perhaps some insurance/accident injury claim.
