Should I sacrifice a Defender cab to the paint code gods?

Hey guys,

I am restoring a Defender and need to touch up the sides. I have two Defender cabs actually, the keeper and the donor.

The donor cab is really rough but it could be saved with a bunch of work. Seeing as how it is gutted and has very little value I am considering taking my Sawzall to it so that I can take a piece to Home Depot for side art color matching (I don't have a way to take the whole cab to HD).

Does anybody have dead-on accurate paint codes for the yellow and red they would be willing to share? I would rather give the junker cab away than junk it if possible.

I think I read somewhere that someone actually took their empty Defender cabinet into the store to get the paint codes.

Whoa, sawzall? SLOW DOWN. All you need is a quarter sized piece of the paint. You can probably take it off near the bottom with a razor

Hey great idea ! Because I am sure no one has ever had the colors matched before on an obscure game like Defender. Maybe we can get someone to make stencils for it too...

Are you on your way to pick it up?

I think you are missing the point of my post .... I am asking for paint codes. If I didnt give a sh*t it would already be in pieces on my garage floor.

I think you are missing my point. I find it amazing that your thought process went to getting out the sawzall and making a sacrifice before thinking to google it knowing that countless people must have repainted Defenders , especially considering you can actually buy stencils for it.

Just sayin...

my local paint store Sherwin Williams GAVE me 2 of these and I use them all the time. a lot of other stores give these away.

I guess I was just thinking worst case scenario. From past experience I know how hard it is to match colors without a direct color match (fading, off the shelf colors that don't quite match, etc). Stencils would be a good option that would allow for slight color variations but the cabinet is nice overall so I dont want to go that route.

I was just wondering if there is a 'gold' standard for red/yellow paint codes for Defender for touch up (not spray).

Thanks Deadly. I took a look. Krylon Red Pepper and Sun Yellow arent going to work because I am not spraying, just small touch ups. Looks like Polly Scale Model Railroad (BNSF Yellow F414398) might work for yellow but no luck yet finding a dead-on match for red.

Spray a bit of the spray paint in a plastic cup and then use brushes to touch up. Or, mask off the small areas and hit it faintly with the spray paint...

to touch up an existing cabinet there's no way you're going to have a paint mixed that matches. You're going to have to do it yourself. Go to michaels and buy some small bottles of acrylic paint and hand mix until you're happy.. then airbrush where you need touchups. Once that's done, clearcoat the whole thing to make your touchups disappear. It would be easy to think there's just a magic match for every defender cab out there but there isn't. Every cab aged, faded, was cleaned, panted etc.. differently. No two would yield the exact same code today as they did leaving the factory.
