I just finished sanding down the removed coin door to the bare metal. Do I really need to prime before I spraypaint?

I don't see any reason not to, any metal piece I've worked on I always prime first. You'll generally have better rust protection, and it gives the paint a better surface to adhere to.

+1
You would also be able to see any imperfections and fix them before painting.

I'd normally say yes, but if your surface prep is flawless (no rust, no pits, and smooth) you don't *have* to prime it.

Besides with a coin door the thinner the application on the hinges and edges the better. That is why I usually use satin black (at least on those portions).

Oh and don't forget to bend/rubber mallet the door a bit if needed to make sure it opens/closes smoothly before you paint. Always sucks to get it painted and reassembled and then remember that it rubs somewhere when you close it. Makes the whole process a waste of time.

I primed mine with some spray primer, took like 2 seconds, let it dry for an hour or so then hit it with the flat black. Looks good to me :)
