Shipping a glass bezel...

7146aaron shipped me one that was beautifully packed. I recall glass was padded on each side and edges with 1/2" sheet styrofoam, but if forget what else was inside the box. I was very impressed.

Just cut a piece of cardboard for each side, tape it around the edge, and write glass on the outside...

Realistically I would build a wooden crate for a piece of glass and pad the glass on all sides.

Do this, but "center/float" the glass around crumpled paper inside the package. I use the home depot lawn bags - very cheap. Otherwise, if the package is dropped, the vibrations go right into the glass. The paper absorbs the movement and allows for a little give.

Styrofoam is evil.

Bezels

I shipped 50 glass bezels last year and this is how I did them all. (49 of them made it. A couple to Canada) For a standard 24" x 24" or similar glass bezel. I get a 24'' x 24'' x 20'' box. I cut 1/2'' or 3/4'' rigid styrophome insulation in 5 inch strips. Use those as a guide to make the box 5"' X approx 30" X 30" Cutting the styrophome to build a box inside the box with the styrophome. Then I bubble wrap the glass and place it in the box and use styrophome peanuts to evenly go around the glass to keep it at least 2 inches from the actual box. This is hard to visualize, I know. I have a couple of bezels to ship tomorrow. I will snap some some pics as I pack them.

I just shipped out an NOS Burgertime glass today. Used a 26 x 26 x 4 box for the large bubble bubblewrap that was wraped around the glass. It was then put into a 27 x 27 x 7 box with peanuts surrounding the smaller box
Shipped via my friends UPS store.

The correct answer is pickup only ;)
But if it must be shipped the next mistake made is people try to keep the package as thin as possible to avoid excess shipping charges. While it certainly costs more to ship - i think using the styrofoam that computer cases come in is awesome. And you can run down to your local ma and pa shop and get the stryofoam and boxes! Cut a slit in the middle of ONE end and fit it like a picture frame. Run tape length and width corner to corner. Cut out one of the sides of the computer boxes. Insert glass into first box and add the second box partially over the first one. Add 3rd box and 4th box adding pressure and taping. The extra carboard adds strength, the thickness of the styrofoam keeps the glass ~3" from front and back of the box and the corners have a couple inches of styrofoam around them as well. Basically free packing materials but will cost you extra to ship because of the thickness. I would say that is a FAIR trade off.

Plus styrofoam is just evil garbage. Reuse the hell out of it when you can.

Here it is after I moved the bends to make it the right size. I use a standard box and change its shape because I can get this size box at Staples for $2.50

This is the bezel to be shipped. I put a healthy amount of bubble wrap on it for protection.

The total cost for the packing materials was $7.50. To ship this to Portland Oregon Via FedEx ground from Indianapolis, Indiana was $21.00. I think that is a good price considering it it pretty much the furthest point from me in the USA. The total shipping weight was 15.85 lbs.
