Shipping a game to Australia for Retro - any tips on how to do it?

So Paul bought my Tempest and is arranging the shipping. Has anyone done this before? It would be cool to hear from others who have tips on the best and most cost-effective ways to get the game from California to Australia.

And I have never put a game on a pallet before (or does it need to be crated)? Is there someone local who I can have do this for a fee? I'm sure shipping companies must do this kind of thing but are they familiar with arcade games?

Tips please!

NAVL does all of that when they pick it up, but I have no idea if they ship to Australia.

This is just a guess but since NAVL stands for North American Van Lines....they primarily serve North America using vans. :)

So nobody here has shipped a game to Australia? How about other countries? Perhaps it would be similar?

Have never shipped a game that far but personally I'd pallet and crate the game to try and ensure it's safety. It will of course not be as cheap as simply strapping it to a pallet but I think it would likely be the best option to get it there in one piece.

I've shipped a few games over.. Couple went into a container, and some went by them selves.. All were palleted, wrapped in cardboard and plastic, then I encased it in heavy plastic..

I've always done the packing up of games, as once I let NAVL do it and it was so poorly done the game was almost destroyed. Do it yourself!

What carrier did you use? How much did it set you back per game? Any tips on import dues and such?

All this effort for a fucking Tempest?

Here's a suggestion...

A couple of years ago some guys from Australia came to one of the LA auctions and bought virtually everything. They were building an arcade somewhere near Melbourne as I recall. They told me that the games were to be taken to the Port of Los Angeles or Port of Long Beach (they are right next to each other) and were sent to Australia in shipping containers. From what I recall it was relatively expensive but those guys got the games for virtually nothing.

Never heard what happened to their arcade though...

Some were shipped via NAVL to a port, then stuck in a container and shipped over. I only delt with NAVL or Pilot air (also dropped off at port). Duties and taxes were all taken care of by the buyer.. Just ask some of the Australian guys that have shipped games.. It's also cheaper to share a container with a few other guys who want games shipped.. See if he can get some other collectors together for a multi game buy and ship all at once.
