Sharp XM-2001 Odd Behavior (Fixed. Bad caps in horizontal circuit)

... usually a cap kit is the first step for any monitor when you're servicing it...
I disagree.

I've repaired too many monitors and other pieces equipment over the past 60 years that someone has blindly changed parts that either did not solve the problem or that created new problems in the process. It is a way too common occurrence in monitor repair, as evidenced by posts on this, and other related, sites.

Inspect, verify the symptom, then troubleshoot and repair. If a full cap kit seems like a good idea (and I agree that is a good way to go on some monitors), go for it after the problem is fixed. At least that way, if a new problem crops up you'll know that it was caused while installing the cap kit.
Also, don't forget to test the large power supply caps. They are not automatically included in most cap kits. If age happens to be the metric for replacing electrolytics, those should also be replaced, shouldn't they?

Oof we're getting into cap kit debates, you're a cheap guy, and cannot afford a cap kit. If money is an obstacle you've picked the wrong hobby for sure. You're not going to introduce any new issues putting on a cap kit if you know how they go in correctly and don't solder like an idiot and rip up traces. I always replace filter caps as well. Cap kit is a minimum on any monitor or power supply, no room for debate.

This thread is the perfect example of why a cap kit is the first step for repair. Op seemed like he already was working on the monitor showing it attached to a swapped tv tube and mentioning changing the flyback, naturally everyone assumed he'd already capped it so no one suggested that. Had I known Op hadn't capped this monitor I'd have suggested that from the start, which was ultimately the fix. Stop being a contrarian against me because you're butt buddies with mecha and andrewb

Well that'll do it. I mean usually a cap kit is the first step for any monitor when you're servicing it and typically if the cap kit doesn't fix it is when people come here and ask stuff. Cap kit is not considered throwing the parts cannon at anything since capacitors are one of the few parts in any circuit that have a measureable lifespan. These machines are 40 years old, the caps need to be replaced regardless if they're still functional.
True but a full cap kit for this including audio and filter caps are 44.25 from Peter. But I also wanted to know what specific caps were responsible for this symptom.

I don't think anybody is being a contrarian, but you yourself stated "if" you have the skills. Many here do not and they do introduce other issues by lifting pads, connecting solder points, etc. It's far better to isolate and identify your issue than going bananas on a chassis. I am not going to swap anything out until I know what is wrong with it.

It happens all of the time in this hobby. Guys create more issue and more problems.

44$ is nothing bro, fix your shit correctly I've seen multiple threads of people complaining about chassis you've sold which I can link here. There's even one thread where you send a guy an empty box instead of a k7000 which you really did do and then filed a fake usps report which technically is a federal offense. This cheap mindset is why you got negative reviews and posts about you.

Unfortunately this is way too true. There are things going on behind the scenes that are very bad unfortunately. Can't even fix arcade games without massive drama in 2025

You are pretending that you know me. Cheap? Butt buddies? Insults say way more about you than me, and my sex life is none of your business.

You're the one who mentioned cost, not me. Cost is not the issue. I stock over 300 line items for repairs, not all for monitors. Hardly cheap. Most of what I work on does not have a"cap kit" or it's equivalent available.
It's more about the fact that people make mistakes. Hell, after more 60 years in the electronics repair world, I still. occasionally, make mistakes. My recall rate 1 year after repair is nearly 0.

It's also about the fact that there are no magic bullets. Reading posts on this and other sites verifies that cap kits do not always fix the problem. I'd venture to say that less than 30% of the equipment I work on would have been repaired by a cap kit. As for arcade monitors, it may be a bit better, but still not the be all, end all that some folks believe. However, I've installed several electrolytic kits, plus the "main" filter cap, but only after I have found and repaired the problem.

It makes troubleshooting a lot easier if you know what you are starting with and that you didn't introduce a new problem to add to the original.
How many posts have you read where someone did a cap kit, only to find out it didn't fix the problem or worse, resulted in a new one?

Anyway, I'll crawl back in my hole now. Time for vittles.

A guy called me cheap on an arcade forum and insulted me!!!! Go pound sand buddy if your arthritic joints can take it after 60 years of repairs 😂😂😂😂 Nobody cares about your life story

Was it the Sharp XM-2001 that had the Odd Behavior, or was it the members of this post? ;-)
Good job on the capacitor fixing, enjoy whatever game you play on this.
please don't lump me in with these other rogues. I'm only trying to restore peace. LOL
