Jameco Electronics # 13995 pot is a great replacement for the original cheap pot Atari had in this game.

5 k ohm linear taper pot, 2 watt, $8.89

Works great. I just installed one on a Rush game. Probably would work on a Pole position also.

good to hear as i just got a rush

Steering pot wiring:

As viewed from front (shaft end toward you) of the pot, the wiring left to right is:

black, yellow-black, red

Takes a 1/2" open end wrench to remove the nut on the old pot. Also need a small Allen wrench to loosed the setscrew on the flexible shaft coupler on the pot shaft.

Use some 1/2" long 1/8" diameter heat shrink tubing over the wires when reconnecting them to the new pot. Acts as a strain relief. Don't forget a new wire tie on the harness to hold it in place against the steering pot mounting bracket. Also acts as a strain relief on the wires.

A suggestion is that you file a flat spot on the new pot's shaft to match the one on the old pot.

I know that I am bumping an old thread but I thought it necessary to add this information for future reference. I followed Ken's suggestions after searching the forums and installed this pot in two of my RUSH's last night. The order that the wires go in is relative to the direction the pot is facing. If the shaft is facing you as he says, then the contacts need to be facing down for this wiring order to apply. Both of my RUSH's had the contacts facing up so the order is reversed.

Also, Thanks for the great information Ken! Both of my RUSH's steer like new now! No more steering jitter and difficulty selecting things on the menus and name entry screens! :)

Rush the Rock pedal pot.

Thanks Ken

Just put a new dimension to this. The original pot was and ETI systems SP22E-5K.

While a lot more expensive than the Jameco pot listed by Ken, if you compare the datasheets there is a big difference.
The Jameco pot has a life of 25,000 turns, the ETI pot has a life of 10,000,000 turns.

I also found that the ETI pots have a small plastic molded bump that fits into the Rush's metal mounting brace and I found it makes it easier to calibrate the steering wheel to center.

That is a smaller pot. And doesn't have the lock notch.

The bigger pot I used for the gas and the sp22e I needed for Alien Extermination guns :)

The Jameco pot has a life of 25,000 turns, the ETI pot has a life of 10,000,000 turns. If you buy the ETI pots, they cost more than the machine.

In the real world, those original ETI pots got nowhere near the claimed life in the datasheets. They were failing in brand new SF Rush games (back in the day) after only 6 months. In the several SF Rush games that I used the Jameco pots, the Jameco pots are still going strong after several years.

I will continue using the Jameco pots because in my experience, they have proven themselves.

Installed 3 of these today and they all work great. 2 RTR and an Off Road Challenge. Thanks for this tip.

Yes, the Jameco pot. I also ordered a few spares.

I'm about to order one of these for a Cruis'n USA. I'm wondering if you did and if it worked.

My concern is about the locking pin. It looks like the hole in my mounting bracket is very close to the center point of the pot. Maybe the operator that owned this previously installed a new bracket? I don't think the pin will line up correctly. I guess I could drill a hole but I was really looking for a drop in replacement.

Can anyone verify if this is the way the original pot mounting bracket looks?

Anyone know of a pot with the locking pin close to the center ?

What is the proper length of the shaft?

How many turns?

I've ordered a manual for the game but I'm expecting that this information isn't going to be in the manual.

I replaced the defective pot with a new 5k pot I had to rebuild some Star Wars yokes. Works great. Had to drill a new hole for the lock pin.

Selecting tracks, cars and letters for initials is now easy and have good control of the car during game play.

It fixed on issue but uncovered another. Steering without the forcefeed back board works perfect, everything is easily selectable and good response. When I hook up force feedback, calibration screen works fine but when race starts steering wheel has strong resistance and pulls left. I have tested this on two working ForceFeedback boards. I know the force feedback boards work because I have another dedicated Rush the Rock cabinet that is working with good steering.

Just want to say thanks, I just installed this same pot in my machine (found mine for $6 shipped from ebay) and it works great. I was about to order the $35 one from happs, and then saw this info, thanks again for the tip!

Please post the link to the eBay listing you bought from

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I figured it would make sense to keep this info together for future searches.

Do anyone have a good source for the pots for the pedals in Rush? Or are they the same? Thanks.
