Anyone know a good source for classic (read old) seven segment displays? I have a Cocktail pinball machine (Roy Clark) that has an older style of digit. Three of the digits have bad segments. I checked all the big electronics supply places and they even have the same style, same pin layout, and same size. The problem is they don't have one display with all the attributes.

I have checked some of the places that have nixie tubes and other stuff online, but have not found a big source for the old LED displays other than ebay. I also went through every new LED display manufacturer I could find to look at their spec sheets with no luck along with some pinball parts houses.

If anyone has any lying around the style is like this.

I need .50" height digits with the pins along the top and bottom. I suspect I may have to update all the digits to a new style unless I can find an old display board to rob some from. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I think I have a couple, but I need to test them. It might be a while before it happens. I am still getting my Roy Clark up an running. You should also check John's Jukes at http://www.flippers.com/ , he knows a lot about the AL pins and also services them.

I also have a lot of other parts for these pins. If you need anything else, let me know and I will see if I have it. I know I have quite a few drop targets.

Are you sure the 7445 segment driver chip is good?

Edward

I bypassed the rest of the circuit when I tested the segments with an external power supply on my bench. The test worked on all segments except the ones that were out in test mode.

Thanks, I will ping him to see what he has... Fortunately I don't need anything else for it other than some flipper rubbers. It is in really good condition and is working all the way except the few segments.

Do you have a manufacturer part number for this? Usually on the side of the display. Displays of this size can have a myriad of configurations including segment colors, face colors, pinouts, common Anode/cathode, etc.

Yeah, I can read the part number on one of them and will post it tonight. It wasn't much help online, but will post it for cross reference.

It says "IEE 1787R" on the side of one of the digits. Of course I have one problem digit on each of the three boards so I can't just swap a module.

Here is what they look like. They are common anode according to the schematics.

Rats!
I tossed out my old IEE databooks a few months back... and IEE has nothing on these on their website.
Still looking around, though.

Thanks for looking. Worst case, I will just wait out a spare board coming available that has the same modules to steal from or just upgrade all of the displays to a newer part. Most likely I will wait for replacement parts since it doesn't impact game play and I can tell the score with the segments that are bad. The machine is in such good shape, I would rather keep it original if possible.

Here is an update in case someone finds this thread with the same problem. I ended up buying some new LED displays to replace the existing modules. Here is a link to the displays I bought from Jameco (Item # 17209).

Edit: MCD ELECTRONICS part number GNS-5011BH-11

Since I bought over 10, they only ended up being $.99 each. They are the same height as the original digits, pin compatible, and within the original module size specifications. I installed them in the game and they look and work great. Here are some pictures of the boards before and after.

those look great!

Thanks for the update... (esp. with part reference)

No problem and thanks!

I did want to get some with the original digit style, but I decided that the same size was going to be good enough. The new digits are bright, evenly lit, and most important all the segments work. It just feels more complete and less like a project with all the segments working.
