So is this something you should do on any ARs you have? I have been lucky with my Ataris but keep reading about it and wonder if I should do this to mine. Does it pose any risk? Obviously they were designed for a reason so if you do the mod and you have a voltage problem what happens? Or is this a case of overkill on Atari's part to keep a game running in the field at any cost until you have to replace everything?

I personally have no need to do the sense mod. Just keep your edge connectors in good condition and clean and there will be no problems. I like to keep things original as possible.

I have had to repair those fingerboards and repin the entire connector from a machine I bought that the sense mods kept just pushing those electrons on down the line. That SUCKS. I have done the mods to mine, that way I would know that the power supply was dropping voltage a lot sooner than the fingerboard burning up. Easy to do.

Personally, I like the sense mod. Depending on your level of skill, it can be a quick fix to keep your games running longer. But if your pretty good at crimping and have decent tools, you should fix the connector as that is really the problem. Plus, its easy enough to snip the jumpers and put it back original after you have gotten the connector replaced. But if you are like me, you hate to see that AR-II get smoked. While you are at fixing the problem, you should probably rebuild the AR-II as well. Your game may not be bullet proof, but you will probably be good to go for quite a while with those 2 or 3 repairs.

sense mod just takes a simple problem and make its much worse, imho...

a "better" fix in my opinion is just to jumper the board to the wiring harness.. most ataris have ground and 5v test points, so its easy to take wire spade terminals solder to harness plug on the board and your done... .. why smoke boards connectors etc over a easy to fix problem?

jumper and done, youll never have to monkey with it again...

I soldered leads to the points represented in the below image for my Pole Position.
