Semi-OT: Raspberry Pi

I know I'm planning to get a few to replace some xboxes as media centers. I also want to make a plug and play arcade for traveling. Those boards look awesome.

Thinking about it... I've been looking for an embedded device to set up OpenVPN for online SF Rush 2049 and Hydro Thunder. I was thinking of getting the Beagle Bone, but this one's even cheaper, and should be sufficient (with USB wifi).

I am certainly going to buy one and evaluate it. I am always looking for new and better ways to drive the digital displays we have been installing on the walls at The American Classic Arcade Museum. We have been very happy with the media players we have used to this point, but the Pi may be a nice alternative and offer some features we do not currently have.

They are maybe going on sale in 1 hour and 42 minutes from now... ;) 0600 GMT.

Looks like they will end up costing around 55usd for the US from reading around a bit.

Yeah, I had one in my shopping cart this morning, but when I was trying to check out, I couldn't get Farnell to tell me how much shipping was gonna be, so I didn't finish the checkout... I figured international shipping wasn't gonna be cheap. I see Newark is charging a $20 fee in the US (probably in addition to actual shipping)... I think I'll just wait a while until they get over here for cheap.

Two main uses that I can personally think of for this:

- media centre
- MAME (when someone gets it working on the RPi)

I don't know if that would work so well. These games were designed with the assumption that the other machines are <10ms away. You're likely to have weird glitches or bugs, or maybe they won't link at all.

Here's a thought though: Naomi/Triforce/Chihiro netbooting. Oh yes.

I did it with Rush the Rock, and it worked fine... I think it'd probably work fine on the others as well, as long as everyone's on broadband. At $35, I'm sure I'd find some use for it. :)

I just ordered mine for a very pedestrian reason. I am going to mock up a Linux PC for my 7 year old with old, throw-away parts. I have everything but the RPi (network adapter, power, USB hub, KB, mouse, and monitor) - it won't matter if something breaks because my up front cost is $35 plus shipping. Everything else is spare parts.
