Seller (not me) claims this to be a prototype because of the CPO

May not be trying to pull a fast one vs. just not knowing when something is a generic overlay. Hard to tell from the photos if its screen printed but it looks like an overlay that Willis would produce. If not, then its some other sub-standard knock-off of a Willis (wait, why would someone knock off a knock-off?) never mind.

Also, if it was a proto Asteroids, you'd think the coin-door would be an owl eye vs standard. Of course, that could be changed out...

I'm not the expert here but two things stick out for me.
1) From looking at the photos, this appears to be a CPO and not screen printed directly on the metal but I could be wrong.
2) I recognize the Willis font used on the CPO.

The first asteroids came with the owl coin door. So if this was a early prototype, I doubt it would have the newer coin door version. Also the first bezels were printed with yellow decals not white, that is a later version bezel. I call bullshit!!!:eek::eek::eek:

I sent him a message. He has changed his listing. He did not know, he just thought it might be a prototype.

The colors and design look like Willis. If the picture were a little more clearer we could read the small print on it.

The guy didn't know, He had a dream!! He thought he owned something really special.
Maybe to him it was a prototype and something special.
Like my 4 cabinets, these are so special to me, like there is no equal.
That's the feel you know, that's arcade love.

I have several of those in my garage right now ... they are definitely replacements for the original, but I do not believe that they say Willis on them.

I did get tons of other replacement CPO's when I got these and most of them were Willis, so it is possible that they are also Willis.

Anyway ... I doubt it is some rare prototype as I have a stack of them sitting in the garage. And most everything in there "ain't worth shit" ... LOL.

Yes, I agree that it is not looking like a prototype, though I'm almost surprised that no one asked for a photo of the serial number plate. Yes, the CPO was too obvious this time, but if it had not been these easy to figure out, the serial # might have helped.

I have an asteroids deluxe prototype with a painted instead of attached overlay control panel. What helps on mine is the Atari serial number plate with the '001' serial number on it...

def not a prototype... if it was , wouldn't it most likely be in a lunar lander cab?

as far as that cpo goes, though, is that indeed willis? i don't see the typical willis copyright/trademark print on it...

I dug them out last night and they do not say Willis on them anywhere, but they were in a pile with about 300 other reproduction overlays (most of them Willis).

They sure do look like Willis products ...
