Sega System16 Shinobi - Plays for a min then freezes

Got a Shinobi pcb the other day, after some loose connections were fixed up it played great.. for about 1 minute, then the screen freezes but music continues to play.

Anyone come across a system16 issue like this before?

Thanks!

Can you instantly reboot the game and it runs again? Does it always freeze at the same point in attract mode, or at the same point in the game? Does this game have an FD1094 encryped CPU?

If yes to all the above then I would say it is starting to suicide, I had a similar problem on a Moonwalker board where it would always crash at the rather computationally intense transition between at the start of the Arcade scene. De-suiciding it fixed the problem, it could be the same issue, the first bits of the encryption table may have started to drop off.

It it has been desuicided then there are other options.

Yes, yes and yes.

Great info. I actually read about these boards and how they suicide some time ago, I'm sure this one is up to it soon. I heard it involves replacing the battery and EPROMs.

I will make preparations for its second life in my collection!

Just wanted to update this- attempted to do a battery swap on the CPU. Pulled the cover, got a 3V battery socket, soldered 2 wires in parallel to the existing battery, removed older battery- all this so at no time voltage was not lost to the CPU to kill the static ram.. but alas- it was a failure somehow. Game won't come on anymore. I will need to replace the CPU with a generic socketted 68k and burn the 6 unencrypted eproms. I got a 68k from a bootleg version of this game i can probably use.

Anyone able to burn some roms for me? =P
