Coin Door Reassembly

Earlier in this thread I disassembled the coin door so I could get the door powder coated. I also soaked all the parts/mechs in rust remover (this is before the rust remover went in).

attachment.php

Last night I put everything back together. I got started with the bottom part of the assembly:

attachment.php

But before I could do the rest I realized I had a couple parts that never got cleaned up because they were still attached to the wiring harness. So I disassembled this, soaked the parts and cleaned up the wiring with some Goof Off:

attachment.php

Then I could get back to assembly everything but somehow one of the little screws that holds the mechanism to the door was missing. So I made a quick trip to Lowes and found a bag of #4 3/8 machine screws to replace it:

attachment.php

Here's the front of the coin door with everything attached. I still need locks but I'll have to order those off eBay so they match the rest of my games:

attachment.php

Next up is probably the control panel. That or I may just wait until the cabinet gets back and start on the side art. I'm putting off the big job...working on the G08.

Didn't have time to work on Star Trek last night because I was painting the patches in the garage from when I added a new 20-amp circuit last week. I wound up painting about 1/3 of the garage.

I did stop by the painter yesterday afternoon. There hasn't been any progress since earlier in the week as he is waiting on some new paint. But I did snap a pic of the dry cab next to the original brown color sample I left with him:

attachment.php

Gloss level looks okay to me. It's just the color is really not even as close as I thought.

attachment.php

He's still expecting to be done this week which would mean tomorrow since they don't work on weekends.

Cpo

Added the CPO tonight. I had asked that the panel be sandblasted to remove rust but they went ahead and powder coated it:

attachment.php

There were a few places where the panel wasn't smooth from welds so I sanded those smooth. Then I used clips to get the overlay in place (the art is from This Old Game):

attachment.php

Started peeling at the bottom and worked my way up. I had a couple bubbles and had to peel back at one point but it came out fine. Here it is after I cut the holes with an exacto:

attachment.php

I bought some new buttons for this:

attachment.php

The harness is reinstalled with the new buttons:

attachment.php

I didn't reassemble the spinner yet because I want to reflow the connector pins on the board and also soak the spinner a bit.

That will be a project for the weekend. Sure hope I can find that E-clip I removed from the spinner 3 weeks ago.

Star Trek paint is done. I went over to look at it today and it was dry but not quite ready to be transported. The color isn't an exact match but it's clearly brown and not purple now. I would have taken a picture but I'd left my phone at home.

I'd say the color is close but looks a little more like chocolate than the original which had a bit more red in it. I really didn't like the original color very much so I'm okay with it being a little different. The finish came out great. He put a clear coat on it but it came out satin and not too glossy.

I'll post some pics when it arrives tomorrow. Should be able to do some before and after shots this week once I get the side art on.

Awesome work!

Thanks!

Picked up the cab today.

attachment.php

Very happy with the finish.

attachment.php

Here's the new paint with a piece of the back door that has the original color:

attachment.php

As you can see the new paint is a bit darker. There's some dirt and dust on that rear panel making it look a bit lighter than it is. I'm pretty happy with it.

Side Art part 1

I look forward to doing side art. It's easy and when it's done and new it looks great. Last night I got started on it. The hardest part is getting it lined up.

attachment.php

Once that's done it's no big deal, though I don't love the pre-masking which sometimes gets its own bubbles.

attachment.php

And there it is.
attachment.php

I was out of time so I waited until tonight to do side 2:

attachment.php

And that's where it all went to hell. For some reason side 2 had half a dozen bubbles in just the first piece I put down. I was able to get those out eventually but I also had a small crease about 3" long near the control panel. I carefully peeled the art back up and tried to pull it out but the crease, and my attempts to smooth it, created a hair thin line I could not remove. I tried wiping a little sharpie ink over it to hide it and that was worse.

So after looking at it for 10 minutes I peeled the whole thing off. And now I need a new side or (probably) a whole new set.

It will be at least a couple weeks before I'm able to fix this.

Some good news tonight. First, This Old Game is going to print me one replacement side of Star Trek side art so I won't have to pay for a whole new set. That's a relief. Thank you, TOG!

Second, just got word from Curt that he has fixed my universal sound board. Turned out to be one bad chip (TL082) which he identified and replaced. He's going to do a burn in on everything to make sure nothing is flaky or dying (remember, these haven't run for 12 years). But it's basically good to go and I imagine they'll be back in California before too long. Thank you, Curt!

So I need to get to work on that monitor this weekend. I'm starting to see the end in sight. I could even have a working Star Trek by the end of this month if things go well.

Love the work you did on this. Such a beauty, and super fun to play. I wish I had a captains chair though. One day. I'd trade my fully restored upright for a very nice captains chair plus cash.....

Thanks. I really do like the game. Kalan's arcade (2084) has a captain's chair that I play whenever I go. It really is the best way to play it.

In my case, I knew I had room for just one cockpit when I started collecting. It was between Star Trek, Omega Race and TailGunner2. I love all three and all three are really best as cockpits IMO. But since I only had room for one, it had to be TG2. So I bought the Trek upright a few months ago and, last week, I picked up an Omega Race upright.

But, yeah, if I had more space, I'd buy the captain's chair too.

Coin Box and Control Panel

I had the coin box powder coated. Got it put back together today. Here's a before and after:

attachment.php

I also rebuilt the spinner. Original bushings on the right. New ones on the left.

attachment.php

And with that done I was able to completely reassemble the control panel. Here's the before and after:

attachment.php

I realize now there's quite a bit of yellow missing from the CPO. Spinner is working great but there are supposed to be 2 e-clips, one up top and one at the bottom. Somehow I only have one. I'll have to pick up another one tomorrow.

Great job painting the cab and the other parts. Wish I had access to your powder coater. All I can get is plain black and I have to do all the metal/surface prep myself.

Yes, the yellow on yours is almost totally missing. The galaxy hardly shows up and the planet is way too pink. My cab is the convert-a-cab. As far as I know, it's all original parts and artwork. CP looks like this...

FWIW, my TOG repro is somewhere between the two shown (the galaxy on mine is more prominent; planet less "vulcan'). Definitely not impressed. Luckily, I have a nice used CP with acceptable CPO. I'll be keeping that one on my SOS conversion.

Thanks, Bill! Yes, I really appreciate Dan at Primo. Not only does he do a good job at a reasonable price, he tells me not to bother prepping anything. AND he is the person I go to when I need an airbrush artist or someone to do nickel plating. The guy knows every person in town who is in a trade and keeps business cards on hand for when people ask for recommendations.

I noticed today when I put the the restored panel on the cab that the red cpo matches pretty well with the side art (both from TOG) but it almost looks like they ran out of yellow ink or something when this was run. I like the original look better I have to say but it's probably too late to complain.

I seriously thought about doing a custom for this. Something with then enterprise on it:

attachment.php

In the end it's pretty much going to be stock (except the replacement power supply and multigame).

Wow, that's pretty.

Mine is also a dedicated game and I don't have a lot of yellow on mine either:

attachment.php

I assume it's the original CPO; it's in really nice shape. I acquired this game well before TOG started reproducing the CPO/sideart so I know it isn't that.

Mine looks to be somewhere between yours and Bill's.

Interesting. So maybe there's more than one version? That or someone was making the red replacement cpo before TOG.

Yep, exactly. Mine's a dedicated game, I know the previous owner didn't replace the CPO and that takes it back 8-9 years. I think Bill's is not dedicated from an earlier conversation with him. I believe the control panels are different from dedicated and non-dedicated.

Mine is somewhat different than your CPO though; it's less red than your CPO and the galaxy stands out much more so either the dedicated vs non-dedicated were somewhat different color-wise or the yellow has faded out of mine or the orange has faded out of his. Or I have an earlier unknown repro CPO.

Star Trek boards are repaired and will be shipped out tomorrow. Thanks to Curt aka cwilbar for identifying and fixing the problem and for volunteering to replace the caps and interconnect sockets—all at a very reasonable price. Also appreciate that, true to his word, Curt was in contact at least every week to let me know where I was in his repair queue and keep me updated on progress. For the record, he's not giving me a discount for saying nice things, nor did he ask or encourage me to do so. I'm saying nice things because it was a good experience.

Hopefully boards will be back before Thanksgiving. I've already started work on the monitor so in 1-2 weeks this could be up and running. It's my first attempt to fix a G08 so fingers crossed I succeed and don't burn down the garage.

Marquee Polish

Spent some time polishing the marquee tonight. Here's how it looked before:

And here it is after four passes with Novus 2 and the polisher (I haven't put the retainers on yet because I need to attach the speaker):

It's coming together:

Still working on the monitor rebuild. I'll have some pictures after the holiday.
