The shifter won't stay up in the low gear. Just keeps falling down in the high gear. It was like this when I bought it. I took it apart and can't tell if there is a part missing that is suppose to keep it in gear or if it's just the microswitch that's suppose to keep it in gear.

Just for anyone who has trouble figuring this out, here is a pic of the spring and balls

and the location on the shifter (bottom part, installed as ball-spring-ball perpendicular to the shifter part).

They are held together because the bottom of the shifter is covered by a metal bracket, see below.

I am restoring mine and thought to post some pics.

Anyone know a replacement spring for these? Mine was broken in half, I stuffed a makeshift spring into it but it's not enough to completely hold it in the up position.

Home Depot has a spring assortment pack, you may be able to find something there.

You can probably get a bigger pack online (so more chances you find the right spring). If it is too long but has a firm compression, you can always clip it.

I ordered this;

7.94mm OD Compression Springs - 1.0mm Stainless Steel Required Length (mm): 14

From;

Cost me £1.49 delivered.

You should have something more local to you doing something similiar.

Thanks for this post! I had the same issue as @EclipseEye had. My spring was broken in half right where it flexes.

While I am waiting for a replacement to come in, I figured out a way to make it work.

Put one ball in, then put one half the spring in with the broken end down, put the other half the spring in broken end up, the second ball bearing, finally reassemble.

The two factory ends of the spring will keep it from collapsing and it is almost the same length. It is holding gear now no problem.

Again, I am getting a replacement - but this will work until then.
