just got this up and running and my little boy can't get his initials on the high score board...how in the heck do you do it? turning the wheel scrolls thru the letters, but nothing will allow me to select one...tried the gas, brake and start button...the I/O test for all of them is good...thanks

On my Outrun a little tap of the gas pedal won't do but a good mash down will.

I'd guess your (accelerator) pedal is mal-adjusted. Mine was in the same state when I bought it. Adjusted the pedal, and score entry works fine. How to adjust it is described in the manual, which can be found here: http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Manuals_and_Schematics/Outrun Upright Manual.pdf

Once you've got that working, you might be interested in the ROMs which provide high-score saving. Search for "enhanced outrun" on these forums.

go to INPUT TEST in Service Menu.
your gas pedal is probably not operating in range.
i think it should be <20H resting and >C0H when pressed.

thanks guys...the gas pedal works ok during the game so i didn't think to check the range of it...i'll check it out

Incorrect assumption. Mine worked fine in game as well, but wouldn't allow initial entry. My guess is that the "unpressed" reading is too high. IIRC, the manual says it should be h20 +/- 4, so h1C up to h24 (those are hexadecimal values, if they look strange to you).

The only side-effect that was noticable in-game was that if I totally let off of the pedal (or never pressed it) the car would NOT stay fully stopped, but instead would creep along slowly.
