Just picked up a Turbo Out Run full-size upright this weekend in pretty good condition. Are all Turbo Out Run's converted Out Run's or were/are some dedicated? This one was definitely converted which isn't a probem for me. My question is this: Is the game conversion a ROM-swap or something similar or is there more to it?

I believe it's just a rom swap. You should be able to convert back (regular Outrun is the better game)

The red "F.40" sitdown machine is the only dedicated version I believe was manufactured.

They also made a dedicated mini, here is mine:

I have experience de-converting a Turbo Outrun board back to an Outrun. In addition to what was said about the suicide battery, there are also a couple of soldered in jumpers on the top board that needed to be moved around and a couple clipped out components on the bottom board. Not quite a ROM swap, but pretty close. I don't know what was clipped out on the bottom board, it has been too long.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

turbo outrun is rom swap plus a suicide battery module. You need to deal with the battery asap or buy the hack to eliminate it.. Regular outrun does not have a suicde battery.

Have you ordered from this site? Is it in the US or UK?

Any chance you could dig up the details of your de-conversion? I agree that Out Run is probably the better game, so I may convert it back. It would be kinda slick if - using a daughter card and either a simple toggle switch or some switching logic, if necessary - to be able to convert from one to the other at will and have a multi-Out Run. Guess it depends on the details of the swap...

Turbo Outrun came as a dedicated mini as well.

Having played Turbo Outrun a bunch and having never played regular Outrun before I was looking forward to being able to compare the two games when I received my Outrun PCB.

Having put in about a dozen games in to Outrun I have to say...

Turbo Outrun isn't nearly as "bad" as some Outrun enthusiasts claim. Don't get me wrong, Outrun is fun, but I also really do enjoy Turbo Outrun.

I think where they screwed the pooch with Turbo Outrun is the linear track. If they had kept the ability to select which "ramp" to go with ... I think Turbo Outrun would be every bit as cool of a game as Outrun. The ability to choose which direction to go was one of the unique "cool" things that Outrun did... and stripping it was a real stupid-assed decision.

I like the weather effects... Turbo's graphics seem a slight bit more refined... and while everyone talks about how kickass Outrun's music is... I sort find Turbo Outrun's music to be more professional sounding...

I am glad I have both... now to figure if there is any way possible to get both to work in the cab with some sort of switcher. At the VERY least I will be mounting both in the cab so switching games will be just a matter of moving the harness over.

I hope one day you will understand what makes Out Run such a great game and a much better driving game then Turbo Out Run.

I'll try to name a few reasons:

The nervous scrolling looks way to much like how Taito's Top Speed and Chase HQ games were build, many flat layers and it all mover very edgy, nevbrvous and way to quick.
Like steering your ferrari F40 through bends it just doesn't move as smooth as in Out Run where you just slide it through the bends.
Out Run Scrolls so smooth, it is such a relaxed driving game with such great music and this all together makes a great athmosphere, remember before Out Run there was nothing like that, Out Run took it all to a whole new level.
In my opinion Turbo Out Run is a completely different game and i still find it hard to beleive that it was made by the same team that developed Out Run

Strange... I thought that Turbo Outrun had a smoother "scroll" (as you put it)... maybe it's due to the speed (Turbo Outrun is a faster game for sure). Not sure.

I currently have Outrun in the cab... it will stay for a while...(especially with the kickass high score save enhanced ROMs). Maybe it's something in the later levels? I did notice that Outrun seemed to have more "hills", etc...

You play videogames and love videogames so I'm quite sure you wil become a "believer" of Out Run one day.
Imo Turbo is a worthless game compared to Out Run.
Out Run can last a lifetime while Turbo is a game that one will forget after a few goes.
There are not that much Turbo fans out there but there are plenty of Out Run fans on this globe.
Even though Out Run is the better game with better scrolling and playability there is something else that made this game so awesome, when it came out and hit the arcades it caused such a big stir, people were so excited about it and it had a huge following even today as it has the status of a cult game now.
We went just to play it, even if we had just one coin and no money for public transportation we went anyway.

Hmmm... I remember Outrun in the arcades, but it wasn't "HUGE" on the level that say, Dragon's Lair was huge. I don't remember Outrun with long lines. I do remember Family Fun Center had a deluxe model with moving cab... that was sort of cool... I may have even played it once or twice BITD...

Over here Out Run was HUGE, it was in magazines, was on a "don't drive and drink"commercial on MTV, even nowadays many non arcade related folks remeber it as the game with the red ferrari.

I really don't understand Turbo Outrun haters.

Turbo Outrun does have some drawbacks, a continue feature being one of them. This is easy to overcome, so far I am limiting myself to .50 a play. After a couple of months of ownership, I still haven't finished it.

It is less based on skill, more about the adrenaline rush of speed. I find it is a lot friendlier to beginners; for example, you can touch the obstacles on the side of the road and not instantly crash.

I had easy access to both in the mall I frequented and Turbo Outrun always found my quarters.

To each their own, I'm very happy to have both games in one cab with the movement of a couple of connectors.

I guess it is like the Centipede/Millipede argument, and I like Centipede a lot better than the sequel.

I think Hang-On was a very big deal when it was released in '85, Outrun is just a logical extension of the formula.

The BIG Deal that came out in 85 was Space Harrier.
Hang On was nice for it's time but way to basic.
Out Run was a whole new concept.
Super Hang on However was a logical extension of the succes of Out Run formula as ask any Arcade crack, Super Hang on tops Hang On in any way!!!
Ask any arcade lover of the 80's if Turbo tops Out Run.......
Answer is never, ever gonna happen.
Sequal of Hang On is better then The sequal of Out Run, That proves how good Out Run was.
Only game ever to live up to Out Run standards is Out Run 2.
I played that a lot in the arcade back in 2005, 2006.
Even the Xbox version rocks!!
I'm not a Turbo Outrun hater, Turbo Outrun was just a big letdown, a big joke.
Even Outrunners is way better.

I definitely like the Out Run select-a-route feature vs the linear track on Turbo. Other than that, not much to not like. I will say that my favorite driver has always been Pole Position (PP II to be specifc) and I'd happily trade my Turbo Out Run for a good condition, working (is that possible without a complete spare machine?) PP II. Any takers?
