So I picked up a Naomi last year from an op buy. Fired it up and it worked great until the monitor in the cab went fifteen minutes into a game.

Fast forward to today. I had noted the Naomi looked a little dusty when I picked it up this summer. I decided to take it home to vacuum it out and clean the PCB.

Well I cracked it open and ran my finger through what I thought was dust only to discover a wretched, tar-like substance coating the vents and fans. It's also on the amps.

I tried washing the mobo cover with a very stiff bristled brush, hot water and dawn, but it has barely put a dent in the stuff. I can't even get it off of my hands and I have no idea how I am going to get it off of the board.

Has this happen to any of you? Have any of you seen it before? Any suggestions?

The game works fine, I am just worried that this is coming from one of the fans or something. I don't need gunk spreading.

I seriously just washed a naomi board a couple days ago with simple green. Spray it on and let it sit for awhile, if you have a sprayer on your sink use that with uber hot water. It should get most if not all of that shit off. PM me if you wish to know more.

Thanks, I wish I knew what the cause of this was. I am debating changing out the fans. I have never seen anything like it on a board before. It is wicked thick, and sticky.

that nicotine shit will do that. the Simple Green should work fine on that, just let it sit for awhile. you might even have to do it a couple times. use an old toothbrush, preferably soft bristled to scrub in the really bad spots, and periodically wash it off with some dish soap with your hand. (the brush, so the shit doesn't get gunked in it)

the MVC2 I just did, the exhaust fan buzzes obnoxiously loud, bad bearing I guess. one of these days I need to find a suitable replacement for those, as I'm sure some of the other NAOMI games we got are probably going to have fans crapping out soon too.

for the CPU fan I blast it with a lot of windex, toothbrush treatment. repeat until completely clean. it's not out of the ordinary for those to get VERY shitty.

or you could remove the sticker on the center of the fan, and put a drop of 3in1 oil in there.

Not a good fix. These fans have oil-less bearings. Any oil will just carry more crud into the bearing and cause it to fail in an even shorter timeframe.

Best thing to do is to replace the fan.

Fans are cheap and i agree, but it will breathe some life back into it for a short while. It's not a permanent fix but it does work on most fans (maybe not that one but it's worth a try).

The degreaser is working ok. It tends to spread the gunk a bit, but I have a system with q tips and simple green.

Is it ok to remove the eprom on this thing?

I'll let you know next week how this made out. I may just stick the board in a box of kitty a couple of days.

Yes pull the rom and the battery too. That's some weird shit btw. How did that even get in there like that?

I have no idea what it was. I thought one of the fans exploded. When I bought it from the op I just kind of figured it was dust. THe stuff is thick and sticky almost like a tar, but the rest of the cab and cab parts are fine.

How do I get the battery out/off of this board? I have never seen a setup like this.

It was something that was airborne and got sucked into the console. That goo didnt come from anything inside the naomi.
If you want a replacement fan here is the size you need...

I didnt look up the smaller fan since mine were fine. A quick measurment gives me 44x44x8 mm. You can probably find one on an old pc video card.
I just went through three naomi systems and all of them have bad fans. They still work but are very noisy.

Riptor, you are a man of many talents. Thank you for the link. I am going to order a new fan today or tomorrow.

the connector? you'll probably have to solder-splice the connector to the new fan wiring. I then personally wrap the wires with electrical tape, throw a zip tie on, and roll it up and do it again lol. good thing about those NAOMIs is there's a lot of empty space under the board to tuck wires away at least.

No, I was hoping to find a replacement fan for the little guy too. I would rather replace them both and be done with it.

I am hoping this thing still fires. It would suck to go through the hassle of setting up a new cab and not have a working MOBO.

oh yeah. be mindful that the CPU fan has to have the RPM sensor in it, as these boards will go into a shutdown mode if the fan is showing as being inoperable. (I learned this when I accidentally forgot to plug one back in once)

Hmm, I a hoping my magic green experience didn't upset anything in the CPU fan.

I've sprayed all kinds of whack shit in fans in the past. I have a comp case that's running original fans from 2000. should be ok, unless you're saying you got it all up in there lol
