I have an opportunity to pick up a Sega Hotrod. Worth it? Any good?

I've been looking for one for a while (6-8 years in good shape). If you do purchase it, make sure the floppy works. Mess to find a replacement. There is a drive replacement available, but I have had issues with it in my other System-24 game. It is also medium resolution. Takes up a pile of space, so many collectors may have space concerns.

Get 3-4 players on it and it's a great game. Awesome cab, good music, and takes about 45 mins to go through all of the levels.

IIRC, Hot Rod's floppy drive must be original and working. All the other sys24 games will work with a vanilla 1.44mb.

I haven't checked for updates lately, but I believe that most system 24 games are finally (or nearly?) cracked. Sub a Gotek USB floppy emulator (~$20 on ebay) and burn some new ROMs, and you can ditch the disk and the FD1094, if the game has one. I have a few sys24 machines, including a Super Masters with a bad FD1094, but haven't tried it yet.

I guess I inadvertently scooped you!

I've had a couple of them over the years - one for about 10 years - and got the bug to get another one about two years ago, and the only one that had been available in a while was on ebay in Petersburg, VA at an inflated price. The guy is a somewhat notorious ex-op that you're probably familiar with, but he accepted a really cheap offer for it as-is/broken. It worked fine.

I think it's super fun and neat. It's different than other driving games like Super Sprint, so it's best to have both in your collection :)

Is it the 4p cab that you have shown?

Yeah, I had talked to the same op as well in Petersburg, but he was not will to move on price on it. I was disappointed sine it was so close to me. I was saving a space for one in my game room.... but that has been eroding.

Yeah, I knew the guy's MO. I was expecting him to counter with a high price and just have to walk away, but he just accepted it, to my surprise. I guess I just caught him when he needed some cash. I couldn't get him to sell anything else in his warehouse for a reasonable price when I stopped by, which is everybody's experience with him... The only other thing I was able to get was a Cheyenne PCB for $25, and it turned out to work fine as well. hah.

Price range? $300-$1200+ for a 4p. They don't come up often enough, so it might take some cash to get one every now and then. 3P? Probably whatever the part-out value is. ~$500 is probably excessive. The 4p is the one to get.

I have fond memories of Hot Rod, but haven't seen one in decades.

Well, I can have one for sale soon that works. Only issues are that the topper is broken, and one steering wheel has the rubber all off. Game works great.

I can ship to the US, so if anyone is interested, I am open to any offers. I can palletize, wrap, and ship no issues.

Tempting..... But shipping / customs would kill me on it. I already have one game waiting to clear customs at the moment...
