Sega Hot rod 1988 4 players Floppy

thanks

Thanks for all the feedback and help. I tried to play the Hot Rod at Funspot a few years ago and it wasn't working, maybe I'll call and see if they have someone over there that knows something we don't.

I wish I knew more about coding, mame, electrical and games but it's all pretty foreign to me. I've reached out to a few local arcade service guys in So Cal but they're not that familiar with the game. I like the idea of dropping in an lcd and mame so we could play multiple games but I don't think i have the time, skill, or money to pull that off.. at least not now

I think most of the people that have knowledge of Hot Rod are on this thread so let's hope something comes up, i'll post anything i find here.

Thanks again
Matt

I know when I first got my machine the drive itself was bad and would report a disk error on power up (man that is an annoying sound). Acording to the previous owner it seems that if the machine get jostled at the wrong time while loading it will mess up the disk/and or drive (his kids roughed up the machine while playing and caused the error, he didn't know how to fix it so he got rid of the machine). I eventually found another board/drive and swapped out the disk drive and it has worked like a charm with my old disk ever since. However, as I posted before, the disk that came with the second board would never load and I have never been able to get the back up utility to work from the machine. The disk I have right now is a copy which makes me very nervous so if a ROM replacement is created I would definatley be interested in one.
Unfortunatley, I had to take my machine apart and put it in storage last month due to lack of space and upcoming holidays so I am limited on what I can do to help at this time.

Hi,

You can use a pre-formatted DOS floppy. There's no problem at all. In my cabinet the floppy was so destroyed that I could see scratches in the floppy surface. I've check the backup tool in the cabinet. It seems to work (It finishes the backup), but It doesn't work (with my broken one it starts with its annoying sound). It loads the game with no errors and then... NOTHING but the sound when inserting coins.

So I need a working copy. Anyone in this not universe, but multiverse can help me, please?????

Merry christmas and happy new year.

Found 3-player floppy, it's on the way

I found a dude in the UK that had a 3-player floppy that I ordered. Should be here in a week. If it works in my 4-player machine I'll do my best to make some back ups. I'll be on the lookout for a 4-player version so please keep in touch if someone gets copies. Will update progress here soon
Matt

here's where I got the disk

Hi all,

I have been able to make several copies of the 4 player Hot Rod disc on my machine this morning here in the UK. They are all tested on my machine as working.

Quite happy to send copies to people who need them for their machines free of charge to anywhere in the world... Just send me a PM as I don't come on here often, but I do check my email all the time.

Take it easy.

Regards

So did anybody came across a solution on this?

I have a System24 pcb, but without floppy disk and FDD, would love to play Scramble Spirits or Bonanza Bros. on this.

How it is possible to make a new floppy with the mame sources?

I want a hacked/merged version of the ROM. Just combine the floppy image into the main ROM to eliminate the drive and disk altogether. I'm not sure how to find someone with the necessary skills/interest in doing this.

I did notice that my System24 seems very sensitive to floppy drive brand (and maybe model?). I've only had luck with Alps drives. Any other brand doesn't work. I've not had any luck with the replacement Alps drive in writing a disk though (reads and boots it just fine though). I'm going to continue looking for the exact replacement model that was in there from the factory.

So a friend and I just purchased a Hot Rod machine (20 years in the making as I couldn't believe we found one!). Though as is the problem with most of these machines, it's missing the disk drive. More importantly it's missing the disk.

Has anyone found a solution to this or is Loomer still offering disks? It's a long shoot, but I figured I would check.

This problem and the cassettes for the DECO systems are pretty frustrating, I hope solutions are found as a lot of otherwise good cabs are getting trashed or converted because of it.

BTW, there's a couple of complete looking, non-working Crackdown boardsets on Ebay right now that have the disks and floppy drives with them, I'm tempted but I've already spent enough money lately and have enough projects. The first one here has only like 5 hours left:

This one has 19 days left:

Would any Sega System 24 board with floppy work or does it have to be a Crackdown/specific board(s)?

Bumping this as I'm finally going to be getting the Hot Rod machine at my house and want to get this thing back up and running. Anyone have thoughts on how to get this disk problem fixed or take it out of the equation entirely?

Any fix for hot rod?

still trying to get my four player hot rod working. Stopped looking a few years ago (moved to Portland, Oregon and machine is at buddy's warehouse in Paramount, cA)

Any tips/ideas would be helpful. I'll share anything I find too (I am a novice when it comes to this stuff though)

Good times,
Matt

Holy NecroThread Revival Batman!

I've never seen this game, but the issue sounds complicated... Wish you best of luck getting it running again.

Welcome to Portland, hope you can get your machine working again.

I have zero information, I sold my Hot Rod and all of the related accessories. I was sadly never able to get it going with regard to the internal backup procedure so unfortunately have no copies of the disk laying around.

The one thing I'm curious about, there are floppy drive emulators/replacements available... Gotek is a commonly available one. There are many firmware images for it, one is called HXC2001, the other popular one is called Cortex. I don't know if either of these would prove compatible with the format the game expects.

Worst case, it might require a different firmware to emulate what the Sega system is expecting.

These emulators are commonly used in the Amiga scene and other areas of retro computing.

They are cheap enough, might be a fun experiment. If these are 83-track disks, you'd just have to figure out what image format would be compatible and see if you can get a way to shoehorn it into a Gotek-compatible format.

I still think finding a board that uses the ROM is the best way to approach this. Reverse engineer the differences between the floppy and ROM based boards, and make a custom board that plugs into the originally floppy-based system.

Good luck, sorry I wasn't of more help.

Thanks Eagle,
I'm not too savvy when it's comes to games/electronics and the machine is a thousand miles south in my friend's warehouse. Just hoping to get it working so he'll hold onto it and not throw it away.
Crossing my fingers a disc will work and he can just drop that in. or... something else easy and cheap.
I did just get a skee ball machine working that I put up on CL today
