Hey guys im working on a deluxe sega harley davidson for a guy. THis damn things been a headscratcher butr ive finally narrowed it down..

SOmetimes it wont boot. While not booting, has 106vac( PRETTY SURE THIS IS OK AS SEGAS USE 100V TRANSFORMERS CORRECT?) into the power supply, no output..

However then the ps fires up at random when it feels like it, i do have good output( 5.2vdc, 12.2vdc) abnd it will say on untiullt he game is shut off then back to the same intermittent situation

SO what gives? bad supply i assume. I did check it over well for bad solder and found none.

Id just hack a switcher in this pig and be done, however the damn ps seems to be sega only as its huge, and has +12, +5, and +3.3 outputs and about 100 wires going to the damn thing..

SO, What are my options fellers? WHere could i find a new plug and play supply?

Is there any universal switcher otu there that has a 3.3vdc output?

Basically, in your situation what would you do? Im trying to be as easy on the pocketbook as i an to this guy.. ( he got had on this and another machine)

ps is a:
sun electronic industry

thanks guys, lmk what you think.

Why buy something 15 years old that's used and will have the same
problem ? They are notorious for bad caps and a couple of transistors
that are obsolete. I know, I have a cabinet full of bad units that I
use for parts.

I hack PC power supplies all the time. A 400-450 watt PS will work fine
and you can get them for $20-$30, just make sure you get one that
runs at 100v (Newegg.com has many). Best thing is they are new.

I've done this on Harleys, Lost World, Star Wars, Daytona, etc.

We have a lot of remote locations, so I've made a generic harness
that allows are techs (especially the ones who shouldn't be called techs)
to install the PS as "Plug 'n Play".

yeah i was hoping to find a bulged cap in there but no dice all look ok..( i know that doesent mean that some might still be bad )

I take it you made the harness using connectors from the old ps?

WOuld you be interested in selling me a compatible new ps with the harness ready to go? or at least that harness there?

If so lmk and ill run that by this guy

Absolutely the way to go. OEM power supply was $250+ from distributors.
I've been doing the same thing ever since I had the displeasure (is that even a word?) of buying an OEM through Betson a few years ago.

Wish I could, I just don't have the time. And yes, I am using the connectors
from the old power supply. It's quick & easy enough to hack in a power supply with
wire nuts but I need something easy for our techs in the field.

that and thats just the right way to do it man. Oher then the ps, the machine is unmolested.

Ill remember that trick when the ps goes out on my trilogy(pc type and adapt)... after pricing one through sega himself at $359, hes decided that having my put in a used ps is the way to go LOL

I was talking to someone about doing one of those PC PSU mods for a NAOMI boardset. I was wondering, is it possible to get one of those ATX power supply extensions and hack that up into an adapter?

that one guy with the guide that's on the internet's all talking about desoldering the connector from a dead motherboard and all that bullshit, can't you accomplish the same exact thing with an extension?

+1

The original power supply is a piece of garbage. I think its max output is something in the range of 245 watts. Buy a quality 450-550 watt supply, hack it in and never look back.

I also do this all the time and do it for techs that shouldnt really be called techs! LOL!

I do the same thing for Naomis. I get the ATX extensions cheap off Ebay
and I have a lot of used harnesses from junked games that I use for the
Naomi power connector. That guy was definitely off his rocker about using
the PC mobo connector. The first one I ever did was an emergency and
that's all I had but since then I keep the ATX extensions in stock.

I was looking into using a ATX power supply for the Naomi and this is what someone told me from the Naomi forums.

""Most people do not use ATX PSU as the +5V is too low and can not be altered. On ATX PSU the +5v is around 4.95 when the Naomi is running, ideally this needs to be +5.1 / +5.2 under load. Otherwise the thing will just lock-up.""

I would like to use a ATX power supply but I don't want problems.. Does anyone else experience this? Or have problems with a ATX on a naomi?

I use atx supplies for these games all the time. Naomi board do just fine at 5.05 down to 4.90. They are not power hogs like the older ttl boars of the past.

I can also say that after a Naomi or lindburgh cabinet has been modified for an atx supply I've never had to change the supply again.

it's in my experience that you will experience lockups more frequently due to the 3.3V than the +5.

granted, the only games I ever had major 3.3 problems were because the power supplies were taking a shit. sucks that there's no way to rebuild them, I guess the parts are obsolete.

I've been told you want the 3.3 to be exactly 3.30V.

and I can tell you the power requirements are that much, I have a Capcom I/O on my Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and the +5 is exactly 5.00V at the mainboard.

yeah for now hes getting used at least. I have a deluxe trilogy( same setup) and i plan on robbing the connectors out of this dudes old power supply and making a conversion harness, as im sure it will come in handy later.

thanks for the power supply idea.

ya, i just fixed one for a customer but it needed a new fan. made so much noise i thought something was wrong with the speakers.

love the police motorcycle even though you have to look through the windshield. got it up to 133 MPH on one of the highways and not sure if i hit top speed !
