Sega G80 Multigame

My star trek also has the curve at the top. Maybe they are all like that.

I have not noticed any sound popping at all.

One question, should a vector monitor be degaussed?

I re-reseated the soundboards and the sound at boot up seemed to diminish/go away. I also get the ST boot up music now. I atribute this to dirty connections ont he backplane which is very common in these boardsets.
I do still have the pop/distorted sound at power down. It sounds like a cap unloading and seems to be triggering a faint sound off the meatball.

The HS input issue is with Star Trek only but does not occur every time I get a HS. I will see if disconnecting the cable Sam mentioned will change this today.

I also notice in Eliminator game play if you are sitting still on screen the thrust will fire slightly at random intervals.
Is this normal?
I do not know if this is something in the game to prevent camping or something related to a controller error.

I am still betting having the old spinner board connected to the original harness might be the problem. During the install in the step after you finish installing the kit on the CPU you install the CPU in the cage with the XY timing boards and power up the game to make sure the new kit boots up. Well at this point the control panel is still connected to the old harness and old spinner board and at this point you can coin up a game and play the game but of course you don't have any sound or speech as the boards are not in the cage but the point is with the new kit installed and running the old harness still controls the game so I assume it must be disconnected from the game because if not you will have 2 spinner interfaces connected to the game at the same time even though the old one has no input from the control panel.
I still say check your leaf switches for proper adjustment and give the contacts a good cleaning. You could have a switch leaf bent and barley making contact or not making good contact when the button is pushed.
You can also go into test mode in Star Trek and check all the switches to see how they respond.

when we installed the multi-kit; we removed the old control panel board completely - so that isn't the issue.

We just left the harness intact / connected to the cpu board. Again; a possible cause.

Could someone please respond to this question about Eliminator by playing a game real quick.

Ok I fired up the game and their is no random thrust wile the ship is sitting still. You only have thrust if you rotate the spinner right or left , you get one thruster wile turning or both thrusters when pushing the thruster button. I took a video so you can see for yourself. What happens when you put the game in test mode? Dose the spinner numbers jump around randomly or only change if the spinner moves. What about the buttons, they read O for open and C when you push the button.
At the end of the video I added what my game sounds like when I power it off.

Control Issues? Check the Ribbon Cable.

ALL the control issues I was experiencing can be attributed to the ribbon cable not being secured properly to the cpu board. Ironically enough Zit commented on how he did not like how loose the ribbon cable fit there and noted it at install. This was the problem.

I had forgotten Eliminator fired the jets when you spin the ship.

Next I will install one of these in my Eliminator cocktail. I am hoping that the control panels on convert a cabs and Eliminator ct are the same size so that I may be able to swap in a control panel with spinner for some games. I want to put a Tac/Scan cp on the vertical side of the monitor and wire it in a manner that would make the game playable in this configuration with proper monitor orientation. We will see how it goes.

Glad to hear you found the problem. I agree that ribbon connector is rather loose fitting. I pulled mine loose while I was inserting the CPU board .
I had that same idea about putting a kit in a cocktail. If I could find a CT cabinet I might try it as I should have enough parts to complete another game.
Be sure to share some pictures.:)

Sounds like the only thing short of perfection here is that the first few notes of the star trek theme are cut off...

What if my replacment G-80 PSU board holds the CPU in !RESET until the +5V and +12V rails are in regulation? oh wait - that PSU doesn't have a connection to !reset ... which is kind of a silly design.

Or... maybe it does... the 3VAC line triggers a 555 timer on the CPU board; right?
Doesn't that hold reset? - I must ponder this more.

yeap - the G80 has a missing pulse detector powered by a 555 timer on the reset line.
In theory; if you hold the AC line low; a reset will fall low as well.

Already planning to use that feature to create a "power good" signal.

Hey guys!

Got my kit on Thursday, and had time on Saturday so I did the install yesterday on my Star Trek upright. Thanks to the maker of the video that was posted on the other thread showing the installation from start to finish...it was VERY helpful.

All went well...just wish I had the Battlestar and Meatball sound boards, but that's OK...I'll of course get the multisound card add-on when it becomes available. It's still way cool to have just the speech in Space Fury and Zektor!

Great job to Mike at VectorLabs!!

I do get the white noise for a split second at initial power up...no biggie...but just wanted to report it.

I did find one odd item...I played a game of Tac/Scan, and at one point into the game I appeared to lose all of my ships, but the game did not end? I let it go for awhile, and finally the game ended when one of the enemy's shots hit something...essentially an "invisible" ship :) .

I tried to reproduce the symptom again, but was not able to so it may have been a one-time glitch.

Also, is there any way to reduce the sensitivity for the spinner when playing Eliminator? It was certainly playable, but it was a little hard to control as only minor turns of the spinner spun my player's ship pretty significantly in each direction.

This is a fantastic kit! Thank you so much to Mike for finally giving us all the multisound option for these still-great games!

Can't wait to show this off at this year's CA Extreme show...hopefully, the multisound card will be ready before then (hint...hint :D )...

Jon
