Myself and another KLOV member (Zitt) installed the Sega G80 Multi-Game in my Star Trek UR yesterday. He did most the bench work while I dug around for the other soundboards. I couldn't find my Battle Star soundboard so we just went with the Universal and Meatball for now.

-NOTE: the directions refer to one of the soundboards as "Eliminator" it is also known/labeled as 'MEATBALL SOUNDBOARD'. It is the soundboard used in the Eliminator and Zektor board stack.

The only issue I have noticed is upon power up and power down the speakers let out a quick pop or distorted sound (like when you turn on/off a pinball machine). It seems it may be triggering the meatball as you can faintly hear a game sound in the distortion. Has anyone else had this occur upon power up or power down? It is not a problem but I wanted to mention it in case others have experienced this. It could be an anomaly of having a switcher in the game.

We also had a couple instances of the fire button triple inputting at the HS screen on Star Trek and Eliminator. This resulted in the first letter selected being selected for all 3 initials. Other times I could input the HS intials with no problems. I will have to re-create this a few more times to see if it is a bug or we just hit the button wrong.

All and all it is a great kit and much better than the earlier version released by multigame.com . I look forward to the multi-soundboard.

Thank you for some great work Mike!

Multi-Sega Free Play

Nobody?
I thought the Initial entry was a little strange. I'm hoping Vectorlabs will chime and and let us know if he saw this during his testing.

As far as the sound thing; it sounded to me like the new board additions held power for longer than the original CPU board; and as a result it sent some random sound requests to the sound boards.

I also was wonder if these games were free play enabled? is there a cpu switch we need to set to enable the free play option.

I too have a kit - which is why I help PeRFiDious out in his assembly. Wanted to get the process down for when I install it in my Captains' chair retrofit.

Again - these are critizms.. before someone gets the wrong idea. These are suggestions for improvement to the multi kit.

I'm also looking forward to the multi-soundboard when it comes out.

Nice to see another kit up and running. I would think missing one of the sound boards would not affect anything other than not having the sounds for that game but you should still have speech. So far I haven't found any problems with my game. The only difference I noticed on power up is the Star Trek song at power up is missing the first few notes like it booted up before the audio amp fired up but that's it. You can hear how mine powers up in my 3rd install video. I am using the original power supply in my game.
As far as free play, Star Trek has none. I asked Mike if any of the game dip switches were remapped or changed and he said no so you set the credit options with the dip switches on the CPU board the same as before. It would be a nice feature to add along with a hi score save so hopefully it can be added later.

Awesome job on the kit install! :beerchug: You guys getting your kits installed make me feel like a lazy sack of shit. :( I gotta get my butt in gear with mine.

My Star Trek came with free play installed at the factory. :)

Same here. I am starting on it tonight. I'll post results once it's installed.

I have not experienced any popping during the testing of any of the MultiGame
boards. One thing that I have noticed is that the Universal sound board will
output white noise for a few milliseconds before being initialized by the Z80.
This is apparently a normal thing as I have heard this with several Universal sound
boards. That is one of the reasons that the Multigame board always powers up
defaulting to Star Trek. The games are all the "security free" ROM releases and
don't have a free play option as far as I know. That is something I am hoping
to do later this year as well as hi-score save.

Also there will be an fix available for those that have the Star Trek Captain's Chair.
As you are aware there is no 2 player button. So to select games another button will be
used instead. I am working on this so anyone else who has a Captains chair should PM
me so I can keep track of who needs the fix.

That's a cool story behind your game.
Do you know how Free Play was added? Something external hooked up, added button or was it a ROM upgrade? Do you have attract mode?
If it's a ROM upgrade then you will loose Free play with the Multigame.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that it's a little add-on card. You have to "flick" the 1-player start button quickly for it to register credits and then you just press it normally to start a game. Seems like something they hacked together just for the contest machines.

I'll know more about it once I start this kit. The biggest delay I'm having is testing the extra boardsets I have since I don't want to do anything to the ones that originally came with this game.

Sam,

On your star trek game, does the vertical line separating your ship status and view screen curve a bit to the right near the top?

Mine does and I assumed something was wrong with my game. I can't tell for sure but it looks like yours may too.

I wanted to say yes but I wanted to be sure so I went out to the game room and played a few games.
Yes mine has a slight curve to the right near the top. I also have some line separation, the line splits into 2 lines near the top line. It's red on the right side and yellowish green on the left. My monitor has never had a cap kit sense I have had it and I have noticed with all 3 G08's I have it seems like they used as many convergence strips on the back of the tube as you could find a spot to stick them so all my G08's could use a rebuild but I promised my self as long as it wasn't too bad I would let it ride. You know , if it ant broke don't fix it. But I can say so far I haven't had a fire.

Sam, does that line look like this on your screen? Here's a pic of mine:

Note that my camera wasn't held level but even so, the line has an obvious drift to the right on my monitor near the top. Just curious if this looks like yours.

This, plus one other item are keeping me from pulling the trigger on a multi game myself.

BTW, it's pretty funny taking pictures of these vector games. You can easily catch them in the act of drawing their lines...

Guys - apparently a freeplay rom hack does exist for the game. I download one a few weeks ago... and a quick google search points to:
http://users.rcn.com/jenison/mars/romhacks/
which has the necessary patch file. Other than that; I have not tried it yet.

Mike @ Vectorlabs - I have a captains chair in restoration as we speak... so please keep me posted on your progress regarding game switching. I was already thinking about how to add a second button - but your solution is better. I have a eeprom programmer - so in theory I can burn a new chip locally.

Is there any way you can post some more details on your multikit? Specifically; I would like to know how you have the games organized in the proms on your board. If I get bored one day; I'd like to play around with changing game codes on the G80 boards.

wouldn't surprise me. I'm just happy the monitor and cage are working.
I beleive there is an adjustment which could be made to the neck of the monitor to adjust for this curve... but right now; I really don't want to mess with it as it could make other areas of the screen worse.

When I get my restore done - maybe I'll consider it as a future project.

Yes mine has the same bend but my convergence is off.
Here's a close up of mine. I think it gets a little better after it warms up so I am sure a cap kit would help on mine.

Thanks guys. I think mine's a little bit worse than yours but not tremendously so. Still, it's pretty interesting that all of ours are doing the same thing.

Getting back on track, PeRFiDiouS and Zitt, when I turned off my game tonight I did notice that Pop and white noise in the speaker wile it was powering down and as far as I can remember it sounded normal for my game, even with Clay's kit installed. As for the Fire button triple inputting at the HS screen on Star Trek and Eliminator, I tested mine and it worked perfect. Two things come to mind, one try cleaning the contacts on your leaf switches. Mine had been setting un used for a few years and the switches needed a good cleaning. The other thing I thought of was the old spinner control board. Did you unplug the 15 pin Molex on the old wiring harness and remove it from the game. I almost left mine in the game still plugged in but the old wiring harness is still connected to the CPU board and it may or may not cause a problem if it was left plugged in.
Last resort, sense you two both have a game, you can swap each others boards between games and narrow down any problem. That's all I can think of right now but I will be glad to try anything with my game to compare any issues you may have. So far I have found none with my game. I even ordered another kit, I just have to decide if I want it in my cockpit or dedicated upright.

I haven't installed my multi-sega yet. Likely won't for a couple of months until the restoration is nearly complete. We didn't disco the wiring harness; left it plugged in as the instructions didn't say a word about the harness.

Your points are valid tho.

G80 Multi

I re-seated the soundboards and the sound at boot up seemed to diminish/go away. I also get the ST boot up music now. I attribute this to dirty connections on the backplane which is very common in these boardsets.
I do still have the pop/distorted sound at power down. It sounds like a cap unloading and seems to be triggering a faint sound off the meatball.

The HS input issue is with Star Trek only but does not occur every time I get a HS. I will see if disconnecting the cable Sam mentioned will change this today.

I also notice in Eliminator game play if you are sitting still on screen the thrust will fire slightly at random intervals.
Is this normal?
I do not know if this is something in the game to prevent camping or something related to a controller error.
