Is there a rhime or reason to which G08's get the tint film applied to
the front of the tubes in Sega games? I've collected quite a few.. and
I cant see a pattern developing yet.

are they for killing glare?

I don't tent mine for one reason. If you don't have the tint you can turn down the brightness on your G08 monitor, the less brightness the longer it will take for burn to set it.

That's not the kind of G08 burn that worries me. :)

Hahah yeah I know what you mean, but if you do all the recommend mods to the power AND you do ALL the upgrades to the chassis, with quality parts, you really have nothing to worry about.

When I did the upgrade kit for my G08 it set me back $77 bucks, but I'll say this, I have a temperature probe on my multimeter and with all the upgraded caps and doing the change to the transistors to being on the inside the heat sink it cooled down my entire machine about 18 degrees I believe. It was drastic!

This is the first time I've heard of any quantitative measure of improved cooling due to that ugly transistor/heatsink mod.

Was this done in conjunction with or isolated from the AC input modification?

Lowering the AC input voltage will absolutely have an effect on the power (heat) produced.

Yes and the upgraded capacitors also run cooler because they can take the high voltage spikes better as well.

I spent a long time getting my Star Trek right, I have one thing left I need to do on the monitor and then I will be done. Its a great game, and I really believe that if you do all the recommended modifications and upgrades, they are good monitors.

I believe the G08 is a great monitor and that some of the recommended 'upgrades' are not necessary.

I'll say this as often as someone promotes flipping over those damned transistors.
