When I turn on my Afterburner II console, the screen scrolls for about 5 minutes until the system apparently heats up. The screen slowly gets better and the scrolling slows to a stop.

I've been told this may be a "cold solder" problem. Any other ideas? How do I fix this problem?

First you have to identify which type of monitor chassis you have in it:

http://therealbobroberts.net/monitor.html

Then you need to be able to solder/unsolder and install parts with regards to polarity.

And finally, you need to know how to discharge a monitor, remove a chassis, and reinstall.

And it helps to know how to use a multimeter and recognize cold solder joints.

If you can do all of the above, it's not usually difficult to install a cap kit (or more depending on the model) into a monitor chassis that is already mostly working 100%. One that is completely dead can be a bit more difficult to repair.

Let us know whether you can do the things above, as well as your chassis model, and we can either tell you what parts to buy (and from where) or recommend someone who can do the repairs for you (for a fee)...

I've been researching how to recap and think I am now familiar enough to give it a try.

This weekend, I'll crack open the case and see what monitor is inside.

Thank you for the assistance!
