Trying to get my seeburg SMC 2 up and going. The problem I have is on coin and select free play, the buttons register the wrong number and the mechanism scans back and forth, sometimes it will grab a record(not the correct one) and sometimes it won't. If you put it on continuous free play it will start with the first record, play both sides and will trip and play every record(both sides) after that with no trouble. What would be some possible causes and what would be some troubleshooting steps to try?

Are you getting actual "numbers", or funky looking garble characters? We have an SMC-1 so I might be able to provide some suggestions.

It'll make those funky characters at power up until the mech hits a limit switch, so the CPU can find it's position.

Otherwise your problem might be corrosion related. Have you opened up the CPU box at all? The batteries leak and can screw up the inter-board connectors and the regular connector headers..

If the connectors get corroded, the CPU might read the inputs intermittently or not at all, so if you only get garbled characters it might not be seeing the switches.

Yeah I'm not sure Pat if that's what he's getting, just wanted to throw it out there to try to get some more info on what's going on with that juke.

The mcu is out of another box. Yes there was corrosion from the batteries on the other mcu. When you first turn the box on it will scan back and forth, stop at the first record and register "00" above credits on the display. It will register coins as you put them in, when you make a selection, either the buttons don't register or they register the wrong number( pushing 5 registers 2 etc. If it does register a real number, the mechanism will scan, but most of the time it does not trip at that or any other record as if it is lost. It also does this on free selection play. When you put it in service to switch to free selection or continuous play, 99 or 00 buttons will register. However, sometimes you have to push them 3 or 4 times before they do. It trips at each record on continuous free play with no problems, it just has trouble acknowledging the correct buttons pushed.
