Secret entrance to my game room

Great idea; can't wait to see the finished door.

After this, I'm assuming you'll build some sort of gigantic turntable where the wall turns and there's identical furniture on each side? :D

Very cool idea !

The only thing I could note that I'd be concerned with is overloading the bookshelves. (weight wise)
Wouldn't want the doors to start pulling the screws out of the hinges.

Man that's gonna be killer when it's done! I had no idea you could buy that book from Beetlejuice! As an alternative, you could use a book that simply says "Greed" a la Adams Family or maybe an old arcade strategy guide book.

I agree. Books are really heavy (not to mention all the weight from the shelves themselves). I'd be looking to reinforce the hinges and screws that hold it all together.

That's what I was thinking as well. There is almost going to have to be some sort of tracks on the floorboard to help sustain the weight... Nevertheless, cool idea!

Been waiting on this thread ever since you mentioned about a secret entrance to your gameroom in another thread.

I'm likely going to either replace the original hinges with stronger ones or add an extra hinge or two to each door. The weight is my biggest concern right now.

You could use heavy casters under the bookshelves on the outside corners. One fat caster per door would work. That way you'd have something to bear the weight, but wouldn't have to install tracks in the floor. The worst thing that will happen is that you may wear a path into your carpet over time. Just like on the cartoons when the dad would pace the floor in the delivery room.

dude get some big old ones from an old house. If they arent rusty, make them rusty. That way youll get that haunted house door creak when you open them too :D

If I were you I would add some castors. Either mount them to the back of the doors, or cut some notches in the bottom for them. That would take most of the weight off of the hinges.

Nice idea. I have 2 hidden bookcase doors in my basement as well. They aren't motorized and don't have shelves yet (my kids are young and I don't want them climbing them). They're definitely cool. Can't wait to see how yours turn out.

Oh, and if I were you I would leave the glass in and add some cool ass artwork to the back of those French door windows. When you are in the gameroom with the doors shut it needs to look like there is something really cool on the other side of the door. Many great possibilities.

I really like the idea of adding castors to the bottom of the back of each book case. I may very well do that.

As for the glass, it has to come out. I already busted 3 pieces while making the shelves, and it's also where I'm going to have some of the book-sliding mechanisms.

Here's an idea to cut down on weight. For some of the hard-cover books, if they're not valuable at all, take the pages out, leaving only the cover and binding. Glue a few foam peanuts in place to ensure the book stays full-looking.

Yep. All the books that slide will modified to make them more lightweight.
