Anyone else out there have their game room upstairs? I've got mine in a second story bedroom with one pinball machine and two arcade machines. I'm planning on putting 2 more pinball machines up there, but can't help but concern myself about the weight limit. It's not a huge room, maybe 10 feet by 10 feet? Anyone know what kind of weight a room this size can support?

I don't think that question is answerable without knowing the construction details of the house. If I were making a general suggestion (legal disclaimer, I'm not a structural engineer and don't profess any expert knowledge that you'd want to base your decision on), put games on an outside or other load bearing wall.

MacPDaddy has the best 2nd floor gameroom story to tell. I don't know of anyone else who uses an end loader to add/remove games from their gameroom. :D

I lived in a loft apartment for 4 years. The dining room served as my game room, and featured three full size uprights, one cabaret, and three cocktail tables, with no problems at all.

I have my 12 uprights in my dining room. And What I did to support the floor was goto Lowes and buy some metal support poles and put them in the basement under the dining room.

My gameroom is in the loft upstairs. It is a bitch to get games up and down the stairs all the time, but I have no structural issues.

Currently, I have 3 uprights, two pins, and a big screen TV. I would probably be scared to put much more than that up there, though.

I also have them spread out a bit, so all the weight is not sitting in one corner of the room.

Not a current photo, but you get the idea:

Bah... you have nothing to worry about. When was the last time you heard of a poker game with 8 fat bastards falling through the floor?

:)

I have 6 cabinets upstairs and figured weight is not an issue. I kinda figured it's like having 9 normal size adults standing in one area.

.

There is a collector on here (that lives on the East Side) that has approximately 60 games in a building he constructed on his property!

Most likely told the builder what was going up there though....

Hopefully he'll chime in.

I had about 10-15 in a second story home a few years ago. Then....moved. Single story from now on! ;)

time to move brah!! You saw my basement. Move to my neighborhood and you can get the same thing for rent,or sale.

Yeah, but in the case of a gameroom he already has 8 'fat bastards' standing there at all times. ;) Once you throw in the real fat bastards things can get hairy.

I'll forward this onto MacP so he can chime in.

Think about it. When was the last time you EVER heard of someone falling through the floor of a reasonably aged 2 story house in the United States?

What about waterbeds? I knew of MANY people who had water beds upstairs... I wonder what a kind size waterbed holds gallon-wise? I estimate oh, 200 gallons maybe? That's 1,600 lbs... add to that the two people that sleep on it... the dressers... the TV... night stands...etc...

EDIT: A King size waterbed holds 135-140 gallons of water it seems... that's still 1,120 lbs of water... add in a hundred lbs for the frame, headboard...1,220... add in at least a hundred lbs for the dresser fully filled... 1,320... a 250 lb dude and his 150 lb wife...1,620... night stands x2... lets say 80 lbs total.... 1,700... miscellaneous BS... 50lbs... 1,750.... then the kid comes in because he's scared at night... 50lbs more... 1,800 and of course Fido runs around at 50lbs more... 1,850...

... you get my drift. You have nothing to worry about.

Most waterbeds were also smack dab in the middle of the room. I assume most guys put there games against the walls where the weight is supported even better.

Yes my game room is upstairs and it sucks!! My stairs also have a 180 degree turn halfway up making is really fun. I don't think I have anymore friends left because of past help getting the games up there.

I currently have 1 pin, 2 video games, 4 pachinko machines, two pachislots, a dartboard, a 25" TV (to run the Wii) and two recliners. I have also had 20 people up there during parties and nobody crashed through. Yet...

PS: I've seen Garry's gameroom and the stairs at his house are tight, but mine has his beat. 4 steps up to a landing just slightly larger than a standard Williams upright, followed by 21 stairs up to the gameroom.

My adding and subtracting of games is a little difficult on the 2nd story.

The 2 pins, Pac and gauntlet are not over a load bearing wall.

Now, to add the 8 fat bastards to the mix (sorry Shardian), I was a little more worried and actually
plan to add a bit of bracing to keep my worries at bay. So, to answer your question, it completely
depends on what structure is below it, 4 games may not be so bad, but don't forget the players.

You & I have a lot in common my friend.
I currently have 19 games on the second story. It's an old farm house with a 90 degree turn in a narrow stairway. At first, when the gameroom was novel I could easily get someone to come out to move a game.
Last year I moved 13 games up & down for a local show. Had to beg/bribe my friends to come out.
